Can Certain Coping Strategies Improve Health?
Health care costs are out of control in the United States and an effective way to reduce them has not been empirically identified. Since 1985, the behavioral health community has been researching the effects of optimism on healthy behaviors and overall health. The theory being tested is optimistic people follow healthier behaviors and ultimately are healthier. Dozens of articles have shown this to be true; however, many researchers believe there is a third-variable causing optimism and more positive health outcomes. The most commonly identified possible third-variable is coping strategies associated with high stress tolerance.

An article written by Kendra Cherry states, “By nurturing positive emotions, even in the face of terrible events, people can reap both short-term and long-term rewards, including managing stress levels, lessening depression, and building coping skills that will serve them well in the future” (Cherry). Optimism has allowed for people to deal with conflicts in a healthy way. Neuroscientist Tali Sharot in her book The Science of Optimism: Why We’re Hard-Wired for Hope argues that optimism provides an adaptive advantage. According to her, “Expecting our future to be good reduces stress and anxiety, which is good for our health. Researchers studying heart attack patients have found that optimists were more likely than nonoptimistic patients to take vitamins, eat low-fat diets, and exercise, thereby reducing their overall coronary risk” (Popova). Dealing with conflicts positively is better for your health and it decreases bad health
The nationalization of oil companies under the presidency of Lazaro Cárdenas is perhaps one of the most widely discussed instances in Mexican history, along with Independence and Revolution. One can see the common theme in these episodes: the explosion of national revolutionary sentiments causing important upheavals in the structures of society. The promises these movements made were seldom realized, but people still remember and regard them as the pillars of the nation. The expression of Nacionalismo Revolucionario remains an integral ethos across Mexican social
Their results support the conclusion that a positive mindset reduces the risk of illness and increases longevity. Future research should examine these findings in older populations, because only one of these studies examined the effect of a positive mindset on physical health of an older population.
Those results demonstrate that both relationships are clinically important as they are greater than the 9 %; therefore, the relationship is very relevant to practice and the results reveal that the psychopathology variable is negatively correlated with optimism, consequently increase optimism should definitely lead with a decrease in psychopathology issues and vice versa.
“Muhammed created the religion of Islam in an entirely different worldview from Christianity in such a way that the two have been in conflict for the past thousand years and will continue to be so.” Culture is religion externalized. Islam, probably the greatest religion conflicting with Christianity, has existed since around 610 AD. The two religions have been in battle since their beginning, and have been ever since. But what is it that makes the two so different?
According to Houston (2014) being optimistic provides improvement to one’s self. Optimism has always been the common element of financial and professional success and improvement. Optimistic persons have more room and chances for improvement than a pessimist. They usually don’t beat over their problems and tries to handle the situation faster. It is extremely
I expected that when one utilized dispositional optimism, they would put forth more effort toward achieving their goal than if they were to utilize any disposition other than optimism (Gaudreau & Blondin, 2004; Geers, Wellman, & Lassiter, 2009; Zhang & Fishbach, 2010). Previous research has inquired into the effects of optimism on task-oriented coping strategies when participants were faced with stressors while striving to reach a goal (Gaudreau & Blondin, 2004). Furthermore, another study has inquired into the effects of optimism on the amount of self-control expended to maintain a greater likelihood toward achieving a goal (Zhang & Fishbach, 2010). Moreover, the hypothesis of other works predicted that optimists would put forth more effort to attain their goals if the said goal is a high enough priority to them (Geers, Wellman, & Lassiter, 2009). Gaudreau and Blondin’s 2004 study yielded data that described when utilizing dispositional optimism, a significantly positive association between task-oriented coping goal attainment exists (Gaudreau & Blondin, 2004). In the study by Zhang and Fishbach (2010), participants who anticipated a task to be difficult predicted that they would perform better than those who anticipated the task to be easy, t(95) = 2.67, p < 0.05. Those who both expected a difficult task and
As it states in the book, coping is “the thoughts and behaviors used to manage the internal and external demands of situations that are appraised as stressful” (Introduction to Health Behaviors, pg. 135). So, when we are going through a stressful life event, we react in varieties of ways to make the stress go away or make it better. Everyone, reacts to stress differently. There are two type of strategies that concentrated on decreasing the negative emotion a person has after the stressful event, which is called “emotion-focused coping”. Then, there is a second strategy called “problem-focused coping”, that attempts to do something helpful with a stressful situation that may be harming (Introduction to Health Behaviors, pg.140). For example,
Coping is facing something; people cope in various ways. In the coping questionnaire we did, there were fifteen different types of coping strategies. Per that coping scale, the coping strategy I use the most is positive reinterpretation and growth, and also religious coping. I do not like any negative vibes around me, or anything/ anyone that produces negative vibes. I believe I am a positive person and use positivity to resist with negative stress. One thing that gives me positive vibe is my religion. I use prayers and believe in blessings from god to deal with everyday life.
For many years, numerous studies have analyzed the effect of Optimism on Psychological and Physical health. Optimism is generally known as being confident that there is a positive outcome to any situation and hopeful for a positive life in the future. It is also believed that those who tend to be more pessimistic than others have a larger amount of stress which can ultimately cause physical illness and emotional/mental exhaustion. There are many factors taken into consideration when measuring optimism’s effect on our health; some factors include the impact of optimism on one’s recovery from illness, coping skills, and responses to behavioral measures.
Taking the above evidence into consideration it is concluded that an optimistic pattern of thinking will make recovery from breast cancer more likely. This is especially evident when considering the emotional recovery of patients. In addition to being found to be less anxiety optimist were also associated with physical and emotional well-being among people coping with serious medical illness, including breast cancer. This project will be focusing on the impacts of chronic health conditions in parents and how alcohol and drug use affect their adolescent children. Stresses associated with a chronically ill parent can cause an adolescent to developed unhealthy coping mechanism such as indulging in drugs or alcohol. Statistics have shown that approximately 13-14% of adolescents experience serious parental illness. Research suggest that information regarding an adolescent’s development and well-being remains underdeveloped. This underdevelopment has created a need for further research and exploration into how adolescents are coping with parental illness stress, and how drugs and alcohol play a role in helping adolescents deal with this stress. The prevalence of increased alcohol and drug usage stems from adolescents displaying internalizing problems associated with parental illness. Internalizing problems consist of anxiety and
Researchers show that cheerfulness outlook extends life by reducing fewer long-term health concerns.A person achieves this by hanging around with happy people, meditating, applying stress-management to boost
Optimism helps people cope with the difficulties of life. It is an urgent topic today. Individuals who learn to be optimistic in almost any situation can not only avoid becoming depressed, but can also improve their physical health and well being. (Diehl, 2001) Optimistic people tend to think to focus primarily on the better things instead of the negative. A person may express more optimism when it comes to making harder decisions. (Armor & Taylor, 1998) Optimists go through some of the same struggles that a pessimist would go through. Even though they both experience the same problems, an optimist would think about their disappointments in the opposite way. (Seligman, 1994) Some researchers have come to the conclusion
