The act of consuming feces is known as coprophagia. While most humans find this disgusting, poo-eating is a normal behavior in some species. It's rare that a plant is coprophagic, such as certain cannibalistic plants, but a surprising number of animals partake in poo.
A mother dog will eat the feces of her puppies, because they aren't able to eliminate on their own. This happens after she licks her puppies to activate the defecation reflex. Ingestion of the feces also keeps the nest clean. Adult dogs without puppies sometimes eat their own feces, and other dogs' feces. Fly specks contain much undigested, or partially digested food. A fly will regurgitate some of its stomach contents after landing on a potentially edible solid substance. The regurgitated liquid dissolves the substance and creates more liquid for the fly to suck up.
Poo-eating is normal behavior in horses, especially in foals. The feces a foal eats, especially from its dam, is thought to introduce microorganisms in the gasto-intestinal tract. These microorganisms are needed to switch from a milk- to a forage-based diet. Other reasons for coprophagia in horses are boredom, nutritional deficiency, and disease.
Opportunistic omnivores, pigs are known to eat mostly plant matter. But they'll also eat invertebrates, small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They'll also eat poo. In Medieval Europe, pigs were used in toilets. The toilet was built raised, and the pig lived below in a cave-like chamber, eating human waste and kitchen garbage. This practice still exists in some developing parts of the world. In addition to human waste, pigs will also eat the waste of other animals when it contains bits of undigested food.
