Most of his time at Sing Sing was consumed being in close contact with the inmates, in dining halls and housing galleries, doing strip searches, searching cells, writing disciplinary infraction reports, and confiscating inmate contraband. The regular routine of the prison from an officer’s point of view consists of locking and unlocking cells, moving prisoners from cells to showers to mess halls, and physically inspecting units to ensure the health, welfare and safety of the prison as a whole. The United States Department of Corrections is currently suffering from a problem of overcrowding of inmates within its prison system resulting in a racial, ethical and administrative challenges. In an effort to address and diminish overcrowding, the Department of Corrections has enacted major policy changes relating to inmate early release credit programs. Therefore, the Department of Corrections through policy changes and the reinstatement of early release credit programs has provided both positive and negative public reception and renewed calls for further analysis on other alternatives to reduce prison overcrowding.

Information regarding the Department of Corrections’ investigation of complaints related to several correctional officers will spread throughout the institution along certain channels (Stojkovic, Kalinich, Klofas, 2008). Starting with the prison warden this information will need to be efficient and accurate as it travels throughout the organization. For my discovery event, I went on a tour of The California Health Care Facility in Stockton. I selected this event because I was very curious to know what it was like to work in a prison setting. My desire for future work settings has been between a nursing facility and prison facility. Before the visit I expected to know how a group was done in lower level prison and the safety precautions implemented. The facility tour was lead by CTRS John Widenmann and Gaganjot Singh. The first thing we toured was there medical mall building where all the prisons went to thee appointments for physical therapy occupational therapy, dentist, diagnostics, x-rays and medical needs. John told us that some inmates walk with out a guard because they have a card to specify where there suppose to be. If they refuse to go to there appointment than force is used too make them. Along the tour he mentioned that the rec therapists sees the inmate five time more in a week than other members of a treatment team. We were able to visit a facilitation room, which had a class for inmates to do artwork. One of the CTRS on staff mentioned that it is hard to have supplies for the art projects.

They are charged with the responsibilities of conducting head counts, monitoring recreational activities, and supervising their work assignments while maintaining a safe environment ensuring the welfare of those who are incarcerated in the correctional facility and employed there, as well as protect the safety of the public communities. They are investigators trained to search for illegal or prohibited goods smuggled into the institution, respond to riots, transport inmates and write reports. It came to my attention there are a lot of incidents of assaults on staff by inmates. There are a lot of safety concerns that the Human resource department have. A few of the guards has raised fear for their safety. Prison officials can’t do their job effectively if they are being hurt on the job. I recommend that the officers should carry something more than mace, to control combative inmates. I conduct a meeting with all of the prison guards, prison staff and the city Mayor Blasio about the unsafe working conditions ate the Department of Corrections.
