I'm a Correctional Officer in a Federal Medium Facility, we have an variety of individuals house there, we have some very rich, educated, and powerful individuals incarcerated along with some poor, uneducated individuals. Some of these individuals don't even speak English, because they were extradited from overseas. These individuals had been trial and convicted of crimes in the US, and sentenced by a judge to Serve a sentence. These individuals create an unique environment because we have people from different backgrounds, education levels and communication barriers living in the same environment. The facility I work is like an small city, we house approximately 4.800 inmates, in 14 different buildings. Correctional Officers enforce the
For this assignment I was asked to interview someone within the criminal justice field. For my interview I decided to interview officer Lewis. I decided to make a couple of important questions that I was curious about. I will list these questions throughout my paper. Each one of the questions I created are very important to understand before you want to go into the criminal justice field.
I personally know someone who is a correctional officer, and he told me about how stressful but rewarding his job is. My compeer told me that he has the chance to see people come into the facility with hardships and problems and then sees the same person leave with a whole new outlook, and their life turned around. To keep his code of ethics in tact, respect must be given to the inmates and he cannot utilize any form of discrimination. When people feel that respect is being given to them they tend to give it back, which would keep some piece in the Prison/Jail.

There are several different categories an correctional officer an be assigned to. This is what a day of being an officer consist of.
Correctional organizations whether it is local, state, or federal will all have numerous different masteries as well as many different staff members that complete those different tasks. The text (Carlson) explains that prison and or jails are both expected to accomplish several sometimes-conflicting goals when dealing with inmates. Among many of those, punish, incapacitate, and rehabilitate as well as deter others from violating society’s rules (Carlson & Garrett, 2008, p. 195). The concept that "all employees of a correctional institution
The “Inside Supermax” video presented some interesting perspectives regarding how maximum security prisons are ran from an outside point of view. The video showed what prison life is like for both inmates and staff members. With prison being such a mentally challenging environment for both the inmates and the guards; I see now why there is so much tension created between the two groups of people that the prisons consist of. Since inmates are under constant supervision and confined to the strict rules and regulations of the prison.

Norm Twyford is the Deputy Warden of operations at the Arizona State Prison Complex, Perryville. As the title suggests, Norm is in charge of overseeing the day to day operations at the prison run smoothly. I chose to base this essay on Norm, for his innovative ideas, my admiration of his interpersonal skills, and the complexity of his job, since a prison complex is essentially a small city. Perryville state prison consists of seven smaller prisons, housed in one enormous prison complex. The complex houses approximately 5,000 inmates and employees approximately 600 staff members. The staff is made up of officers, for security. Administrative staff, to handle the administrative duties. Maintenance staff, to maintain the facility. Motor pool personnel, to service our fleet of vehicles. Kitchen staff, to feed the inmates. Education staff to ensure the inmates receive education while incarcerated, in the hopes this
Police Officers have to leave their houses everyday not knowing what they may face in a day's work. Police Officers have to deal with dangerous situations, and must be properly trained to deal with these. Police Officers face many dangers on a daily basis, like foot pursuits, vehicle pursuits, traffic control, heat strokes, stress, and making an arrest. Police have to train and learn how to face these dangers, so they can come home safety to their families at the end of their shift.
I would like to join the Department of Corrections because I feel as if this would be a great change for myself. Furthermore, I've heard nothing but good things about the Department of Corrections and I wish to be a part of a team of dedicated and motivated correctional officers who have the intent of making the San Andreas Correctional Facility safe and clean. I'd like to join because I have the capability, both physically and mentally to handle this job. I've experienced a lot of things, especially living in Los Santos and I feel as if
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has guidelines and regulations that they must adhere to when it comes to providing healthcare to inmates within the prison system. Although some of the guidelines and regulations vary from institution to institution, the authority given to the BOP when it comes to health services is much the same regardless of which prison an inmate is housed at. The BOP regulates the health care services that are provided to the inmates based upon the needs of such. Most prisons have psychological services available to each inmate along with a provider for other medical services. As other needs arise, the BOP is responsible for providing and maintaining
255). Respect must be mutual between inmates and correctional officers and it should not be a one way street. A clear define prison structure will emphasize on strict routine, authority and zero tolerance; however, all actions from correctional officers must conform to the Eighth Amendment. Leadership, communication, and solid management skills will set a tone for violent criminals confined in maximum-security facilities. Offenders who are sentenced to a maximum-security confinement will eventually realize that they are in it for the long haul, and their chances of reintegrating into society are zero to none. Therefore, in order to solve a majority of the facilities operational problem we must “create an environment where a positive custodial adjustment can occur” (Maghan, 1996, p.
Prison overcrowding is one of the many different problems throughout the world that law enforcement faces. Prison overcrowding not only affects those in law enforcement, it also affects the taxpayers in the community as well. The problem of overcrowded prisons is being handled in many different ways. Some of these ways have been proven to be sufficient and successful while others have not been so successful.
Some of the Correctional Officer functions are, to enforce and keep order, they supervise activities of inmates, aid in rehabilitation and counseling of offenders, routinely search inmates for contraband items, and often report on inmates conduct on a day to day basis. While the daily duties of a correctional officer can truly be viewed as the proverbial “daily grind”, they often have to perform these prison duties while dealing with stressful and often times very dangerous situations. While most of us on the outside world try to make a routine day more enjoyable, routine for the correctional officers within the prison is not a negative thing in the least, as a routine day is very important to the successful operation of a correctional facility. “Routine in a prison environment is the consistent, scheduled, and expected activities that make up the day within a prison” (Seiter, 2011).
What are some challenges that correctional administrators are faced with regarding the population of inmates? This may be a question that many people do not consider. Correctional administrators have to work very hard and be creative to ensure that all inmates, regardless of their challenges, needs are being met. The challenges of typical inmates are characterized by those that are mentally ill, elderly, and female inmates.
