Is it possible that The Titanic could have been unsinkable and could nearly 1500 lives been saved? Titanic was one of the most magnificent ships that were ever built in the world, standing 104 ft tall and 882 ft 9in long. Titanic sank on April 15th 1912. The tragedy of The Titanic could have been prevented if all safety regulations had been followed properly, if all compartments had been locked down in the bulkhead, and if all lifeboats had been filled and carried properly. First, there were six iceberg warnings, Captain Edward John Smith, did not think of them being as serious as they were, and eventually resided to his room at 9:30pm. Roughly around 11:30 pm under a moonless clear sky, a lookout saw the iceberg dead ahead, he rang the warning bell and telephones the bridge. The engines were quickly put into reverse, the ship was turned sharply. Direct impact was not made and it seemed as if the ship had avoided the iceberg other than some ice fragments that fell on board when passing it. Thinking collision hadn’t been made everyone was relieved, but little did they know the iceberg had left a gash in it (Histrory). The gash that was left in The Titanic was 220 to 245 ft long and no wider then an adult male hand. When Captain Smith realized that impact …show more content…
Titanic was equipped to be able to carry 64 lifeboats, Captain planned to carry 40, but only 20 lifeboats were carried on board. With 2,223 people on board and only 20 life boats with a maximum capacity of 40 to 65 people per boat. Twenty life boats was no were near enough for that many people. Sixteen out of the twenty lifeboats that were on board made it into the water. It took 80 minutes to dispatch 16 lifeboats and they were not even close to being full. In addition to not having enough lifeboats they need not fill the life boats to their capacity so more people sound have been saved
On April 15, 1912 at 11:40 P.M. the Titanic collided with an iceberg and by 2:20 A.M. it was at the bottom of the ocean; over 1,500 people died. The massive loss of life was a shock to the world. The “unsinkable” ship had sunk. Despite the Titanic’s claims about being “unsinkable” and completely safe, many avoidable things led to the immense number of fatalities, such as the shortage of lifeboats, lowered bulkheads, and the lack of binoculars. Bruce Ismay, the designer of the Titanic and director of Whitestar line, often chose the comfort of his passengers over their safety. While Ismay was designing the Titanic he thought that the deck was too cluttered so he decided to keep only a third of the lifeboats needed to save all of the passengers
The Titanic‘s construction began on March 31, 1909. On May 31, 1911, the ginormous ship has sailed. As on the night of April 14, 11:40 PM, lookouts spotted a large iceberg dead ahead. As the ship and the iceberg move towards each other, BOOM! The Titanic and the iceberg crashed like two middle schoolers in a hallway bumping into each other. A big total of 1,517 men, women, and children died along with the Titanic. Most killed themselves after the Titanic’s sinkage, and a total of 328 bodies were found. But who was to blame of the sinkage?
If the titanic never sank then we might not have found a new way to build our ships more efficiently or the safety of traveling the sea would not be as safe. We might have but it would have been
The Titanic is different from the other ships because, they thought that the Titanic was unsinkable. “It’s another ice burg warning…the captain had seemed quite unconcerned” on 106 and 107 so they aren’t worried that they will not hit the ice burg and sink because those people don’t think it can sink. “There was much talk among the passengers about the Titanic being unsinkable.” On 105 so they aren’t worried that the boat will sink. “Nicknamed the Unsinkable ship” on page 102 it even says unsinkable
2 lifeboats saved people from the water, and 9 people plucked from the water after the lifeboats launched. (Fowler, Dave. Titanic
The "watertight" compartments of the Titanic's hull were not actually watertight: they were open at the tops. This is one main factor that aided in her demise. The ship could have actually stayed afloat had only four compartments flooded; sadly, five became flooded. One witness, Colonel Archibald Gracie, stated the collision was “a sudden shock and noise forward on the starboard side.” Other passengers might not have heard or felt anything, that is, until the boat started sinking.
What caused the“unsinkable” R.M.S Titanic to capsize down to the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean and kill an abundant number of people? The “ R.M.S Titanic” sank due to an assortment of obstacles; however, it can be narrowed down to a few critical things. The survival of people was based on availability of lifeboats and wealth class. Mr Joseph Bruce Ismay was a wealthy businessman who built ships. Mr. Ismay made it away from this tragedy because of his wealth. An iceberg along with the crew’s ignorance and unreadiness caused the R.M.S Titanic to sink to the depths; however, Mr. Ismay along with other wealthy people along with some poor made it out alive.
The RMS Titanic is a passenger liner that sunk in the North Atlantic in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. About 1,500 of the estimated 2,224 passengers died. The ship sailed full speed despite ice warnings, preventing it from stopping or steering away from the berg. Watertight compartments flooded, causing Titanic to go under. These details are supported by accounts and physical evidence, and therefore, widely accepted as truth. However, there's a few alternative conspiracy and architectural theories.
On April 14th, 1912 at around 11:40pm the Titanic smashed into the iceberg. The iceberg stuck the starboard side of the ship causing the plates of the hull to buckle. When the plates buckled it opened a seam from the iron plates pulling away from the seams causing the watertight compartments to start flooding. The Titanic was designed to be made to be able to stay afloat with up to the first four watertight compartments flooded (Greeley 3). The collision caused at least
Thomas Andrew, the Titanic’s architect, most possibly could of been culpable one thousand five hundred dead people. There were only half of the needed lifeboats, they needed forty and only had twenty. Consequently, not everyone could be in a lifeboat. Needless to say ,why would the builder not put in enough lifeboats. This was on page twenty-two. The so called “watertight” compartments were spilling into one another. Therefore, more than four compartments ,were being filled at one time. Was this a purposeful omission
"Come see the unsinkable ship!” the townspeople cried out. They were, of course, talking about the White Star Line’s newest vessel, the Titanic. At eight hundred eighty-three feet long and ninety-two feet wide, the Titanic’s first voyage was packed full, starboard to port, with two thousand, two hundred, twenty-eight people on board. There were three hundred thirty-seven people in first class, two hundred eighty-five in second class, seven hundred twenty-one people in third class, and eight hundred eighty-five crew members. Even without the people, the Titanic weighed 46,328 tons. The vessel was one hundred and four feet in height and had twenty lifeboats. The architect, Thomas Andrews, was aboard the ship during its first and last catastrophic trans-Atlantic voyage.
This is not saying that the iceberg did not have a huge impact on the sinking of the ship; however, think about how many lives could have been saved if it was not for the ignorance of the crew members.
lifeboat safety drills were made mandatory. Limitation of a ship owner's liability would only be liable for the value of whatever parts of the ship remained intact, no matter how many deaths in the incident. The Titanic didn’t carry enough lifeboats for her passengers and crew. After the Titanic’s historic accident, ships were required to provide one seat for every passenger and crew member on a lifeboat. The titanic was an in enormous ship.
One thousand five hundred and three people died in the sinking of the Titanic, but was it avoidable? The behemoth of a ship was supposed to be unsinkable; however, due to the Captain’s negligence, the speed of the ship, and not listening to multiple warnings it was sunk. Miss Jessie Allis Mary Goodwin, a twelve year old girl, lost her life due to the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Unfortunately, she died because she was a third class passenger so she was sealed in by the watertight doors.
Those on the deck could see the huge iceberg weighing thousands of tons pass by like a dark cloud of death. Still, there was no panic. Many people just did not realize the severity of the crash at first. They went along with their card games, their brandy drinking, and their socializing on deck. Some people even played casually with the ice. When people realized that the iceberg had punctured the side of the ship, still there was no panic.
