Requirements for counselor: State of PA According to PA state law, a school counselor for grades K-12 must have completed an "approved program in school counseling" (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor). Certification can be given either for elementary counseling for grades K-6; or secondary school counseling grades 7-12 (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor). Required coursework for certification includes 60 hours of providing supervised counseling of direct services to individuals and groups outside of the candidate's official internship/field experience working with individuals and groups (60 clock hours) (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor). A 300 hour internship/supervised field experiences are required. These must include instruction (70 hours) at the elementary school level or 75 hours of direct service to individuals and groups for candidates seeking certification at the secondary school level (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor). An examination is required: all candidates, even if they have obtained certification elsewhere must take the general Praxis test (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor). Acceptable scores constitute a 173 on Praxis Mathematics, 172 on Praxis Reading, and 173 on Praxis Writing (State certification requirements, 2012, American School Counselor).
