Ethical issues in a counseling practice lay the foundation of a therapist in practice. Ethics are at the center of how the counseling process functions and operates in a successful manner for the clients who seek help in such a setting. In order for the counseling profession to be ethical and hold professional recognition, there are many facets that need to be examined and outlined to make sure all counselors and practitioners are functioning at the highest level and withholding their duties required by the counseling profession. Why is this important in counseling? The informed consent process involves establishing the basic framework between a therapist and their client that serves as an ethical and legal requirement as well as the formation of a basic working partnership between a therapist and their client. The informed consent is essentially an informational exchange between a therapist and a client that outlines the process of therapy. It also allows the client to be informed of their rights in order to make conscientious and thoughtful decisions related to their therapy. An interesting fact about informed consent is that is it can be provided in written and oral form, or a combination of the two (Corey, 2013). If done orally, the counselor must document what was addressed in the informed consent. The information that must be presented to clients, first and foremost, are their rights and responsibilities as a client working with a particular therapist. Beyond this, an informed consent should outline the goals of the counseling relationship, the responsibilities of the client as well as the therapist, expectations of the client, limitations of the counseling relationships, fees involved, approximately how long the therapy process will take, and background information regarding the therapist, particularly their past experience and educational qualifications (Corey, 2013). Corey also mentions the informed consent process is an ongoing educational experience that lasts the

Informed consent is supposed to show that the patient has been informed of the possible risks or consequences, typically for treatment they are agreeing to receive from a doctor. A person might be faced with giving informed consent in research settings, specialized treatments, and/or routine appointments with any health care provider. In the medical field physicians must obtain informed consent from every patient/patient representative in order to treat the patient without leaving themselves open to a lawsuit for negligence.
As per Beal & Lewis, 2014 Informed consent is a process of education and the correct education is a key to the ability to provide consent.
Counselors are required by law to take a proactive approach to ensure informed consent is properly applied in accordance with (IAW) Mental Health Act Colorado Revised Statutes (C.R.S.) §12-43-214 (2); 12-43-222(1)(p) disclosure shall be made to the child. After the client signs the inform consent and understands what therapy entails, then the client may start to feel a little at ease. The therapist may need to ask some questions regarding the client’s background, to help the therapist understand the client. Also, the therapist needs to be warm and empathetic in listening to the client. This will help
Informed consent is defined by the following in accordance with the APA 2016, p. 7:
Informed consent means that the psychologist or researcher must make every effort to be sure the patient understands the purpose, benefits, risks, and other options of the test or treatment. Then the doctor or nurse must get the patient’s consent before starting (American Cancer Society,2014). The reason why this is required for every experiment, is because the participants has to understand the risks of the experiment so they are willing to agree on, or in other words, give consent to participate the experiment.
Informed consent is a process where the physician provides the patient with information so that the patient can make a choice whether to accept or refuse treatment. This concept originates from the patients legal right to direct the type of health care they receive and the physicians ethical duty to involve the patient in the provision of medical care. Children do not have the capacity to give informed consent but their parents must give informed permission for treatment (Pozgar, 2012).
As a counselor, there are certain guidelines that we must follow as it relate to the treatment of a client. Research states that “Informed consent is an ongoing part of the counseling process, and counselors appropriately document discussions of informed consent throughout the counseling relationship” (ACA, 2014, p.4). This guideline is crucial to the well-being of the client, because it allows the client to decide if they want to continue this client-counselor relationship. It also, exhibits that the counselor is in compliance with all federal state laws to protect themselves and their practice. Most clients who choose to participate in counseling have never participated however, it is important to provide an overview of
