The purpose of this memo is to provide a professional biography of the person I interviewed for the expert interview portion of this project. Dr. William Harrar is the person I chose to interview, Dr. Harrar is the Director of Bloomsburg University’s Center for Counseling and Human Development. It will be a concise report, consisting of Dr. Harrar’s education, field experience, and publications. I will highlight items in the aforementioned areas that best reflect Dr. Harrar’s expertise.

Research helps explains things in a more detailed and practical sense. We learn more through research and gain more understanding about the topic. Research is very important if you want to prove the integrity of a study especially when writing a paper. Conducting a research and citing sources will make it more believable.

The value of empirically based knowledge versus applied knowledge is used by professional counselors to answer various questions concerning their clients and themselves. Empirical knowledge gained from observation and experiments is “explanatory and it proves explanations that help to answer the questions” (Broderick 32). Applied knowledge is acquired through learning to help the counselor to provide solutions and answers for the questions.

It takes very special people to want to make a difference in people’s lives, to want to help them to be better. Some people seek to become counselors after overcoming a most important life challenge. The individuals that seek the profession of marriage and family therapy do not think of this work as a job or career, more typically a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one to counseling profession (An Invitation to Counseling Work).

For the purpose of this paper, this writer, will use the APA Task force on Evidence-Based Practices (2006, p. 273), definition, beginning with the foundation and expanding it to mental health, defined evidence-based practice as “the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture and preferences” (Norcross, Hogan, & Koocher, 2008). According to Dr. Norcross, counseling is a dynamic process, with many moving parts, and the clinical experience is the integration of parts (pillars), the actual work in progress, which creates an opportunity for the best clinical outcomes and improved quality of life (Laureate Education Producer, n.d.).

Counseling is a tool that is widely used by many people. Merriam Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary defines counseling as advice and support that is given to people to help them deal with problems, and make important decisions. This paper examines the career of a Licensed Professional Counselor, the education requirements, certification and licensure levels or requirements, salary, and the future of this profession.

Within the eight weeks of this course, we learned a lot about psychological research. This course provided an understanding of how research is completed. This course also gave an understanding of what methods to utilize based on that particular research that is being conducted. Research helps understand the current state of the environment around school counselors, and most importantly the students that they help on a daily basis. In the counseling profession, having knowledge of the theoretical approaches and which ones will be essential based on your standpoint of human nature, problems, and changes for an individual is important. Having a clear understanding of the approaches is key, but the counselor’s knowledge of his or her own principles, life experiences and viewpoints will define how the counselor will effectively perform their job.
