These are excellent example for not mandating counseling as a prerequisite for certification. Another point is that there is not enough empirical data to support the client’s benefit from counselors in-training participating in therapy. Great Britain requires to counselors in-training to participate in therapy as part of their certification process. Self-reporting studies confirms the fact that these counselors in-training see a personal benefit. However, we must begin to look past the perceived personal benefits from the counselors and begin taking a scientific approach to capture how this practice benefits the client because there is not enough studies that indicate that this training transcends to the client. This is supervised and checked regularly by an accredited member of the BACP to ensure that the requirements of the BACP are being met. A person using counselling skills in other occupations may use similar methods but will not be formally using the guidelines and being assessed in such a way as that of a qualified counsellor. The intention of the use of the skills is also different. The counsellor and client relationship is a therapeutic one and both parties understand the potential or intended result of it, whereas using counselling skills may used for other purposes. For example, a person in a professional setting such as a people-management role may use listening, reflective and paraphrasing in a similar way to a counsellor yet the objective is different. The use of the counselling skills facilitates the relationship of the manager and the employee but there isn’t the intention behind it that there is between a counsellor and their client.

Although professional standards were promoted throughout the 20th century in a wide range of settings (Centore & Milacci, 2008), it has only within the last quarter century or so that the counseling profession established a formal entity called the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) in 1981 for this purpose (Adams, 2006). A year later, the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates (NBCC) was established in 1982 to provide accreditation standards for counselor education as well as a method of assessing educational knowledge (Adams, 2006). In this regard, Juhnke (2009) reports that, "The NBCC was established through the American Counseling Association (ACA) in 1982. The reason for NBCC's original existence
As the standards of the counseling profession are continuously being shaped, I desire to play a role in the educating
As a counselor in training, I believe that counseling is a collaborative process between you and I. Counseling is a personal and safe process that deeply respects and honors each individual’s unique life experiences. Here are some aspects of counseling and therapy as I perceive and practive it: Therapeutic counseling
Firstly it’s important to distinguish between using counselling skills and being a counsellor. From my own research I think the distinction revolves
The American Counseling Association website defines professional counseling as “a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.” As the counseling profession has grown and the demand has increased over the years there has been some confusion of what the difference is between counseling and psychotherapy. Sharf (2012) reports, often times
ETHICAL FRAMEWORK, LIMITS OF PROFICIENCY AND THE LIMITATIONS ON COUNSELLORS COMPARED TO OTHER PROFESSIONS THAT USE COUNSELLING SKILLS.
The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) define counselling, along with psychotherapy, as being “umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies” (BACP, 2012: 1). In addition, counselling is provided by practitioners who “work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing” (BACP, 2012: 1). Those who practice counselling in a professional manner undergo intensive training and personal development, the latter of which has been “defined in terms of self-awareness and change” (Wheeler, 1996: 75). These changes, according to Johns, “influence the
Sanders (2002) argues in his book about the different forms of support and supervision a counsellor should have, for example: ‘burnout’ is a word describing damage you might do to yourself if you don’t get sufficient support. This can greatly affect the way you portray a helping relationship between you and the client. There is no doubt that counselling takes a lot of effort, concentration and positive mind. So as a helper or supervisor you should do two things according to Sanders (2002) Firstly “Maintain ourselves to prevent burnout or damage to our clients” Secondly “Develop and improve our helping abilities” (Sanders, 2002, p.96) As demonstrated by Sanders (2002) a counsellor can achieve this by, having informal on-the-spot support to formal supervision that requires you to maintain effective practice, for example continuously asking your supervisor questions about how you could ensure you’re working within the legal framework and how you can improve your skills to provide the best counselling sessions for your clients. This can be achieved by attending training were you develop or learn new skills to apply into
Counseling is a tool that is widely used by many people. Merriam Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary defines counseling as advice and support that is given to people to help them deal with problems, and make important decisions. This paper examines the career of a Licensed Professional Counselor, the education requirements, certification and licensure levels or requirements, salary, and the future of this profession.
In order to pursue my dream career in being an addictions counselor, I require a higher level of schooling to ensure that I will be doing a good job and be the perfect fit for my clients. There is a lot of courses that one can take in order to be an addictions counselor, but for me I got my eye on three. Firstly, I will need to have more studies in maths, this can be about any high level math class like algebra or business mathematics. For example, Indeed shares that you need to use math to understand how to build successful statistics (Ring). Thus, as an addictions counselor, I must be able to calculate factors like a drugs dosage and what it means to my client quickly in my head. Secondly, I will need to know about alcohol and drug abuse to be an effective counselor, this class is essential to be an addictions counselor.
Counseling is a relatively young profession when compared to other mental health professions. In my brief personal and professional experience with the field, I have come to define counseling as a process of engagement between two people, both of whom are bound to change through a collaborative process that involves both the therapist and the client in co-constructing solutions to concerns.
As a potential counselor, there are many areas that I need to grow in to be an effective therapist. Being in a graduate program learning about different theoretical orientations, and participating in mock interviews has really been an eye opener for me. Not only am I recognizing my own personal style in therapy, but I feel I am identifying my strengths and weaknesses as well. Acknowledging that there is always room for improvement, I am also sensing which population I prefer to work with. Amongst the different types of populations (gender, ethnic background, religion, age), I understand there are various clinical issues that affect each group differently and would need a specific type of therapy or a treatment with combined therapeutic elements
Counseling is defined as ”the use of therapeutic strategies to help clients address personal concerns and mental health issues” (Nystul, 2016). Pursuing counseling as a career involves many years of formal study and certification or licensure. After receiving licensure to practice as a professional counselors it is a requirement to maintain involvement and certification in certain associations in order to hold your license. These association often require further education and/or professional practice in order to maintain membership in these associations. It is quite obvious that counseling requires a large amount of commitment and passion in order to pursue it as a career and maintain a title as a counselor. I have conducted an interview with a professional counselor in order to further understand the experience of being a counselor. The interview that I conducted explores the requirements of maintaining and receiving a counselling career, the experience of being a counselor, and what characteristics or skills a professional may have. The Individual who agreed to the interview was a counselor by the name of Susie Facio. Susie Facio, through this interview, will be giving us a look at what influenced her to become a counselor, what her work entails on a day to day basis, and what qualities and skills she has acquired in order to become a successful counselor.
