For this paper I looked into many different Ohio county jails and many different state prisons and was amazed at how little if any information was given about these facility’s from everything from the organizational structure, chain of command to the classifications of inmates, to the fact that there is no mention of any problems inside these facility’s which I find comical considering I’ve done county time and have seen and lived firsthand the day to day problems that accurse at the county level and know a few who have gone to prison and have talked about the problems there. So to fulfill the requirements of this assignment I have to write about two separate facility’s so I choose one county jail and one state prison to write about. The first place I’ve decided to write about is the franklin county correction center which is run by the franklin county Sherriff’s office. This is the first stop for anyone who is arrested for any reason in Franklin County. Franklin county has this listed under there department structure as corrections division and there are two facility’s labeled corrections center one and corrections center two. The combined daily population is on average 1,000-2,000 inmates. Franklin County Corrections Center I, 370 S. Front St. is a 643 bed maximum security facility. Approximately 95% of it 's population are felons. Franklin County Corrections Center II, 2460 Jackson Pike, is a 1,671 bed maximum security facility. Approximately 70% of it 's population
The Pocatello women prison is overcrowded, something is wrong with our women. Fair enough, more women are going to jail now, years ago it was unlikely if a woman went to jail. Women were looked on as a mother figure, or caregiver. However, times have changed, and we now have more women committing crimes than men or just as much men. Nevertheless, State prisons are a financial institution and a business, it takes a lots of money to run a functional Prison. Pocattelo need three prisons built in the next five years, costing one hundred and sixty milions dollars. This paper will focus on the state of Idaho and the city of Pocatello prison sitting story problems. I will talk about , , financial issues faced in building a new prison, recidivism rate of women inmates ,education and conclusion.
According to statistical data found in the Bureau for Justice Records, there are a number of problems that most prisons in the country face. The records indicate that the number of adult federal and state inmates increased from `139% in `1980 to 260% (Walker, 1999). As a natural default, the United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This in itself brings about one of the major problems that are faced in modern incarceration which is overcrowding in most prison facilities. The number of offenders in the country has increased rapidly over time while the country prison system has not really been able to cope with this rapid increase. Prisons intended for one or two inmates are now crowded with more than fifty individuals. Because of this most prisons are overcrowded and most of the facilities available are unable to cater for the needs of all the prisoners (Siegel, 2009).
State-run jails are currently operated in four states Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These states have full operations and responsibility for their jails. Alaska also has a state operated jail system (pg.80). State-run jails are more effecientally ran but, most counties are not likely to choose this method. Cooperative (regional) arrangements are widely used. Kentucky, Virginia,
There are five state prison systems in which exist in today's penitentiary systems and they are maximum-security prisons, close-high security prisons, medium-security prisons, and open security facilities. Variations between these five systems are common and uncommon because in a
Learning about the county jail was an interesting experience. Amongst all the sight seeking, I realized there was several departments within the jail itself. The different departments are called the booking department, incident reports, and finger printing department.
On February 9, 2015, the American corrections class and I went on a tour to the Georgia State Prison at Reidsville. Georgia State Prison at Reidsville is the fundamental greatest security office in the condition of Georgia. Found on Georgia Highway 147 in unincorporated Tattnall County, outside of Reidsville, It is a piece of the Georgia Department of Corrections. The current fantastic structural planning incorporated a strip by Julian Harris titled Rehabilitation portraying exchanges and occupations. Many redesigns were made. The mission of the prison was to “Ensure public safety by effectively operating a safe and secure facility while housing medium general population, mental health and problematic male adult offenders incarcerated in the Georgia prison system”.
The overcrowding prison reflects that the inmate population has grown much faster than the funding for prisons, which is controlled at the state level. In most cases, state funding has not come close to keeping up with the rise in the prison population, leading to decrepit prison infrastructure that is wholly inadequate for housing such large numbers of inmates. Without capacity to house inmates properly, some prisons have resorted to having prisoners sleep in gymnasiums, and many have overcrowded cells to accommodate the extra bodies. This overcrowding has led to deteriorating cleanliness of prisons and declining safety. Today, non-violent prisoners are forced to live in close quarters with violent ones, and the results are predictable.
The prison system in England and Wales could reasonably be described as being in crisis. Discuss.
All County jails are designed to detain inmates. Wabash County Jail was built in 1979 and Miami County Jail was built in 2009, both jails have similarities and both have their differences; thing such as cell blocks, how jails control their inmates, and how jails allow family and friends to visit. These things are very important to the jailing process.
Have you ever noticed anything that is exactly like something else? No, me either! But as a criminal justice student, I’m being forced to compare one of the things that we’ll probably see in our everyday life. That one thing is the difference between two jails. As we were visiting the two different jails I noticed a lot of things that were different like building, the security, the visitation area, the prison area, the holding cells, the work rooms, there were a lot of things that were different. So I’ll like to take the time to tell you about three of the things that stood out to me.
Question: Discuss the history of the prison system in the United States. Be sure to identify the various stages that the American prison system has gone through. Also identify what problems were present with each stage as you see them.
Prisons and jails hold some similar characteristics but are completely different models in which they serve in the criminal justice system. Some of the types of crimes that America faces today are: violent crimes, property, white collar or organized crime, and public order crimes (Worrall, 2008). The criminal justice system sets the regulations and policies of how an offender will be held accountable for their inappropriate actions. The criminal justice system is a process that takes time and money from society. The following information will briefly discuss the main purposes for the jail and prison systems, which will focus on the length of sentencing, funding sources, and private sector ownership. Let’s begin by explaining the length of
As we all know – there are tons of social issues within the entire world that Criminal Justice Practitioners deal with, most likely, on a daily basis. One of the many social issues I’ve chosen is Prison Overcrowding.
My paper will discuss the problems and a few of the effects that prison overcrowding causes towards the inmates and the guards. I will first address the issue of violence that prison overcrowding causes. My next point will be the health of the inmates discussing both their physical and mental while in overcrowded prisons. Lastly I will discuss the physical and mental health of the correctional officers and how the job could lead to correctional officers having issues in their private life.
The never-ending battle between government run prisons and privately run prisons continues to grow every single day. Both state and individual run facilities have their pros and cons. Although some union confinements can sometimes be better maintained and easier to keep running, the advantages of independent run penitentiaries greatly outweigh the pros of union run pens. Privately run confinements should be a consideration due to their cost efficiency, their ability to be less congested, and their improved security.
