Amir is a young boy who is not brave enough to stand for himself. Assef threatens Amir for hanging around Hassan, a Hazara. Assef is about beat up Amir when Hassan pulls out his slingshot and tells him to back down, which he does. “ A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything ” (Hosseini 22). This is linked to the method of - what the character does. Amir’s inability to show courage when being threatened is evident as a young man.
Humans have been known to take the majority of actions solely for their own personal gain, especially if the outcome allows them to receive praise and public recognition. In many different cultures, pride is a quality character trait because of the respect and honor that come with it. Amir, an Afghan boy in the novel, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, is pressured by his society’s view on pride because of its importance in his culture. In addition, the high standards that his father has set by being a highly successful and idolized businessman add to the expectation that Amir must follow in his father’s footsteps to create a good life for himself. In his younger years, Amir’s views on pride were solely based off of others. His
In the novel The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini tells a notable coming-of-age story portraying the actions and thoughts of Amir, a penitent adult living in the United States and his reminiscence of his affluent childhood in the unstable political environment of Afghanistan. Throughout the novel Khaled Hosseini uses character description to display his thoughts on sin and redemption.
The Kite runner is the first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini, published in 2003 by Riverhead Books . It takes place before Afghanistan’s revolution and its invasion by Russian forces. The kite runner is a vivid and engaging story that gives a picture of how long Afghanis struggled to triumph over the forces of violence, forces that threaten them even today. In this novel , four themes have been introduced, first of all Redemption is a way to make up sins committed , secondly, Adversities contribute to a person’s personality , thirdly , Fear can lead to severe mistakes and long term consequences, before last, After pain and struggles come survival and lastly, Friendship is the essence of a bond that seek the best mutually.
“And where is he headed?’ Baba said. ‘A boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything,”(Hosseini 22). Amir admits that he is a coward, but sometimes uses it to get what he wants. For example, while Hassan was being bullied in an alleyway, Amir stood and watched instead of helping Hassan.
One important asset that our generation lacks is an amount of courage. Too many people are worried about what other people are going to think of them if they stand up for another person that is getting bullied or any circumstance. The world would be a better place if more people had enough courage to take a stand. In “The Kite Runner” there are many times courage is shown throughout the intense story.
Every danger in the world needs a hero to fight against it. Even though ideas and interpretations of heroism have shifted throughout the years (from Greek heroes like Odysseus with his wit to Superman with his extraordinary powers), being a hero tends to include altruism, dedication to what is right, and defiance against what is wrong. And even though many heroes are celebrated and have been carved into history, many others have not. Ordinary people can be heroes, which is portrayed in Kite Runner by Hosseini. Amir, the main character, shows the exact opposite traits of how the other heroes around him act. The Kite Runner defines heroism with defiance and sacrifice, while the protagonist fails to meet these qualities and consequently tears his family apart.
Courage One of the many themes seen in The Kite Runner is courage. The word courage means to say what one believes in and then be able to stick up for it. It means defending values that you believe in and fighting through any pain that may be caused. Courage is simply the ability to persevere through something that is difficult or scary, not knowing the outcome. Many times throughout this novel, Amir, Hassan, and others are seen to have pure forms of courage.
The Kite Runner is an exciting story filled with action, fear, guilt and redemption seen through the whole book. Through all of theses aspects of the novel courage plays a big role throughout the book. As the book unfolds courage is seen in Hassan and Amir that defines who they are and who they become to be. Courage is a big personality trait Hassan poses. The first time Hassan is seen showing courage is near the beginning of the book when Amir and hassan are walking on the street of Kabul.
The day of the kite fighting, Amir shows who he really is. While Hassan was getting raped by Assef, Amir just watches, acting like a bystander. The sad part is Amir could have stopped the rape. Amir is a coward for allowing Assef to rape Hassan. He does have a chance to intervene, but never does. Amir runs because he is a coward and wants to protect his own skin. After Amir runs he explains to himself why he did not help Hassan and why he ran exclaiming, “He was just a Hazara, wasn’t he?” (77). Amir believes since he is Hazara it does not matter that Hassan was raped. He was poor, illiterate, and a servant and he did not matter in this world. When Amir believes he’s only a Hazara, he sounds like Assef. Assef thought Hitler was the greatest
As individuals, and families clamor for the opportunity to reside in the United States of America and pursue the American dream, it is evident that the land of the free and home of the brave emblematizes a meaning which extends greater than the breadth of newfound wealth. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel “The Kite Runner,” the main character Amir, the son of a wealthy, altruistic, and respected merchant, spends his childhood seeking for acceptance with his father, and through this process, narcissism voraciously ravages Amir’s thoughts leading him with an abiding guilt. Likewise, this foremost concern of self-preservation, gave way to the blistering, wintery day in 1975 which changed Amir’s life is gashed by the wrath of guilt, a wound which began to close due to the hardships which he had to endure while emigrating to the United States of America. Ultimately, the magnanimous, tabula rasa known as the United States of America paved the way for Amir to reciprocate the devotion that those around him continually displayed, a devotion to sacrifice. All in all, the laborious peregrination towards the American dream, whereas it functions as a socioeconomic crux in the lives of many immigrants and American citizens alike, served as an emotional climacteric, emblematic of the manner in which Amir managed to become the culmination of Baba’s only dream, a noble son.
In The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, Hosseini makes a clear division between those who are wealthy and those who are not by contrasting Amir to his peers. In Afghanistan, treatment in the community is related to race between the Pashtuns and the Hazaras. However, wealth and prominence play big roles in how even Pashtun children are treated. One example of this is how Amir is treated by others in Afghanistan.
Within every person, there exists some type of power, but it is the way one uses it that defines if they are good or evil. Power is always unpredictable, it captivates the worst and corrupts the best. In rough times people need leaders to look up to, a voice to guide them and actions to be taken. This leader can either abuse or use the power correctly. For example, in Afghanistan in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the political conflicts caused many people to flee, but some brave individuals stood around to take over the violent and oppressive rulers. This power isn’t just used in political complications but it is also expressed in social life. It is used in homosexual and heterosexual relationships. Usually, one half feels as though they
In the novel The Kite Runner the text explores many different ways the relationships and people surrounding a person can shape one's self, this is most prevalent in Amir. During Amir's childhood, he is constantly vying for Baba's attention and affection. Amir's cowardice is seen through many different examples in the novel, mainly Assef and his violent actions bring forth his cowardice in many forms. Hassan is Amir's best friend in the beginning of the novel, he is also a role model to Amir.
When you were a child, do you remember ever making a promise to be loyal to a friend? Maybe you exchanged cute heart necklaces or pendants or carved your names into a tree. In Khaled Hosseini 's The Kite Runner, two kids, Amir, and Hassan seem to have a strong friendship, represented in their names carved into a pomegranate tree. However, Amir reveals weakness in their friendship when he betrays Hassan by not intervening when the town bully, Assef, sexually assaults Hassan. In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol S. Dweck describes two types of mindsets. One is the fixed mindset, which is the belief that a person has a fixed amount of intelligence, and one cannot see growth in error, and a growth mindset, which is the belief that
Many people know what it’s like to lose a friend but, not nearly as many people have gotten rid of their friends from birth forever. Amir is one of those people who have gotten rid of his childhood friend. Although Amir and Hassan had always been best friends, Amir’s jealousy got the best of him and ended up as one of those people who had gotten rid of their best friend from his childhood. A great author, Khaled Hosseini explains what happens further on in someone’s life when they get rid of their childhood best friend. In the novel The Kite Runner, Hosseini uses betrayal, jealousy and guilt to demonstrate what one’s life could end up in the middle east if one leaves after inevitably destroying a childhood friendship. The stories that Hosseini tells from Amir throughout the entire story is descriptive of the theme of betrayal, guilt, and friendship.
