Cases and disputes are evaluated and resolved in courts or tribunals everywhere across the world every day. Out of all these cases, it is the rarer cases involving sports disputes that provide some of the more intriguing and interesting cases that should be studied in order to get a better grasp on the effectiveness of both tribunals and courts as well as how they balance the rights of the player and the rights of others affected. The extent of these sports disputes can often range from minor things such as minor defamation cases, but can also involve large cases involving things such as use of Performance Enhancing Drugs, contract disputes or even League Lockouts.
Before delving into the effectiveness of these courts and tribunals, it is

Tribunals are composed of a legally trained chairperson along with two law experts who specialize in this field. They are often distinguished from courts due to their less formal procedures and by the fact that they operated in specialized areas; also the decisions of tribunals are mainly concerned with the laws of a particular organisation attempting to deliver administrative justice where the court can dispense justice through an independent judiciary. Tribunals are a key division of the courts in dispensing justice as an alternate way. There are over seventy tribunals today that often deal with over a million cases in the space of a year, all with the same view of making justice accessible to …show more content…
A video is released 4 days later, showing Ray dragging his fiancé out of the elevator unconscious and then laying her on the floor. On March 27, Ray is charged with 3rd Degree aggravated assault. Rice pleads not guilty to this case, and pleads to join a first time offenders program which can clear him of his charges within a year, in which he is accepted into. On June 16, the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell meets with Ray and Palmer at the NFL league headquarters in New York. 8 days later, rice is handed a two game suspension in effect as of August 30. On September 8, a surveillance video is released in which Ray is shown striking his wife in the elevator. Hours after its release, the NFL team in which he played for (Baltimore Ravens) terminate his contract and the Commissioner suspends him indefinitely from the NFL. On November 30th, Ray wins his suspension appeal and is reinstated to the NFL for the 2015-2016
In the case Karas v. Strevell (2008), there were a junior varsity hockey player that was injured by two players of the opposing team and suffer neck and head injuries. The facts about this case is that the league itself rules prohibited body checking from behind, and also encouraged each jersey has STOP as a reminder to all teams to avoid possible injuries from behind. The father of the athlete feels that the two players that injured his son should be liable and held accountable for his son injuries, therefore a suit was filed. In the suit the father also, included the hockey association for their negligence.
In the article”NFL Apologize to Women for Ray Rice” Roxanne Jones who was the former Vice President of the NFL and national lecturer on sports , is trying to convince others that the domestic violence act Ray Rice committed against his former fiancé Janay Palmer was a more severe act than he was held accountable for. She is addressing an argument to Roger Goodell , the NFL commissioner ,that Rices’ suspension from playing football should have been longer than just two games. Jones believes the suspension what unjustified because Rice was seen on camera dragging Palmer who was unconscious at the time out of a casino elevator. Jones compares this domestic violence act to an animal abuse crime, which occurred
Rice was released by the Ravens and indefinitely suspended by the NFL on Sept. 8 of last year. Rice was ordered to serve his suspension in full, and complete therapy and training in domestic abuse education groups in order to be reinstated, which he has completed successfully.
Millions of kids watch NFL games. They also follow them outside of playing football. NFL players should remember that children hold these players to a higher standard. For instance, “Janay Rice sat next to her husband during the press conference, though simple assault charges against her were eventually dropped. Footage from the night showed Rice dragging his wife's unconscious body from an elevator” (Craggs). Ray Rice is a popular player in the NFL, with millions of fans. Hearing the news, I found it to be extremely disappointing. Ray Rice had too much to drink that night, and in the elevator he punched his wife, Janay, in the face multiple times and knocked her out. The NFL fined Ray Rice millions of dollars, he lost his job and endorsements. Other than losing money, he lost his fan base, including kids who looked up to him as an amazing running back.
On February 19th, 2014, a video of Ray Rice, the running back of the Baltimore Ravens, was released in which he was seen dragging the body of his limp fiancee out of a casino elevator. After being arrested and spending a year in a pretrial intervention program, Ray Rice was suspended for only 2 games. However, shortly after this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the domestic violence policy of the NFL, making it so that first time offenders would receive a 6 game suspension, and second time offenders would be banned for life. Then, on September 9th, another video was released of Rice punching his fiancee in the head and knocking her unconscious. In response to this, the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract and the NFL suspended him
The spectator of this sport has an obligation to the players of the sport, to make sure that the organization is protecting and looking out for them. Yet not only should the viewer be held accountable for the lack of communication in consequences between the player and the pro scene, but the organization of the NFL needs to make sure that their players have a full understanding of what is going on and how they need to protect the players. The current situation that is understood, contents contain implied knowledge that all parties of this table are in uniform knowledge and agreement to what comes of playing football. Finally, this should also happen at the youth level when kids are just getting into the sport, as it would better inform the parents and the kid if they understood the full
Do people still believe that History books relay accurate information about the past? How do we know that the events which occurred hundreds of years ago (as stated by history books) actually happened? In this book, Tey did a good job in proving that the history books we read do not usually contain events that happened the way it is written. She explains that human beings do not like it when they are challenged to go against what “history” has labelled “the truth”. The author depicts this vividly in this text using Richard III. No one, ( before Grant) had ever attempted to solve the mystery involving Richard III and the death of his nephews, and for hundreds of years, Richard III was automatically labelled the “evil uncle” without justification.
Ray Rice agreed to a press conference and was ask many questions about the situation that should not been asked in my opinion. Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was accused of child abuse to his 4 year old son which cause swelling of legs, back, buttocks and genitals. Adrian Peterson time was reduced to no jail time and four thousand dollar fine and 80 hours of community services Peterson said, that he was truly sorry and just wanted to discipline his son. This act led to hungry reporters asking him personal question about his relationship with his divorced wife and many other things that should not have been

A tribunal where people accused of violating criminal law go to have their criminal responsibility determined by juries and judges is known as a court. Courts main purpose is to find out the truth and get justice. Courts main role is to interpret and apply the law. They sometimes uphold limitations on the government. There are two court systems, which are state and federal courts.
Sports disputes fall into two general categories: external and internal. External sporting disputes are handled in a state Court system and generally include: "contract or tort; intellectual property; trade practices and competition; criminal law; taxation; broadcasting and media; and other statutory-based disputes" (Bellamy & Hayes, 2007, pp. 5-6). Internal sporting disputes are normally handled by sports tribunals and deal with
Ernest Van den Haag strongly contends the need for capital punishment in our society in his article. Van den Haag provides a substantial amount of convincing facts and information to support “The Ultimate Punishment”. Van den Haag discusses such topics as maldistribution, deterrence to society, miscarriages of the penalty, and incidental and political issues (cost, relative suffering, and brutalization). The death penalty is indeed the harshest/ultimate punishment a convicted criminal can receive in our society. I agree with Van den Haag’s article. I am in favor of the death penalty system in the United States. Through capital punishment’s determent process, I feel it is a
The use of experts within the tribunal system is exploited to a greater extent in tribunals; Doctors Chartered Surveyors and other professional experts can be called to give their opinion on certain forms of evidence. This is the same typically in the court system but in tribunals the Chairperson can ask questions themselves and ask for opinions, in the courts the
If Rice was convicted, he would face up to five years in jail rather than a fine. Two months after his incident, Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program focused on rehabilitation (Elliott). As a result, Rice’s case never went to trial, and his aggravated assault charge would be dropped if he completed the program. Rice was originally suspended for two games without pay and fined $58,000 because of his aggravated assault charge but then he was suspended for six games due to the NFL’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault (Elliott). Ray Rice will likely never play another game in an NFL uniform because of the fact that he was caught on camera abusing his wife (Tyler).
