PRACTICE Creating a positive learning environment Whilst the role I hold is one of educator, for the learner to feel safe in their relationship with me as their teacher, I need to convey my strong concern for them as a person, not just in what they are learning. I will speak to each student respectfully and model the same using language that is empathetic and positively framed. I will also engage with the student beyond the classroom and show interest in their concerns and passions. I also feel it is important to know each student’s story so that I can adapt my responses to their behaviour accordingly. Consideration will also be given to dance-specific elements such as music choice and costuming. My mentor teacher used the strategy of selecting three songs for the students to one choose from allowing the student’s choice while maintaining a safe environment. One of the distinctives of a safe learning environment is the establishing of fair and clearly articulated classroom rules and routines that encourages self-discipline and does not diminish the learner’s self-esteem (Rogers). Before the year begins, I will develop a strategic plan to prevent disruptive behaviour by seeking the answers to fundamental questions such as “What will I do when…?” or “What is the best time to intervene?” (Rogers p 50). As suggested by Rogers, when developing the rules of the classroom, I will focus on three key areas: safety, learning and respect so that the “list of rules” do not become overwhelming (Rogers, p. 130). Using these key areas as headings, I will collaboratively develop classroom expectations, including behaviour consequences with the students thereby increasing their ownership and understanding of the rationale.
