Creating a Reading Intervention for a Middle School Student Essay

I was a little apprehensive about this project because it challenged me to do something I have never done before, identify a student’s difficulties in reading, asses their ability and create interventions for the student. Reading is such a tremendous skill and there are so many factors that contribute to the success of an independent reader. While working with my student I realized how vital recognizing difficulty in reading is for some readers. I learned how to asses areas such as comprehension, listening comprehension, fluency, oral reading, phonemics, vocabulary, spelling and phonics. The process of reading is like a jig-saw puzzle. M’s mom says she loves being a school counselor and one of the reasons is because it allows her to spend a lot of time with her kids. M’s mom works with some students who have a variety of issues and she says some of them stem from lack of family support in the home. As a counselor she has seen a lot of students struggle in school and she calls it “a ripple affect.” She uses that phrase to describe a student’s self esteem and level of success if one piece of the puzzle is missing Although M’s mom is aware that sometimes all of the pieces don’t fit for various reasons, she sees a direct correlation between family life and school very often. Her experience with students who do not have a very supportive family life tend to fall behind in school because they do not have help at home for homework and parents often do not make it to parent-teacher conferences. M’s dad is a very quiet man who is always ready to help his kids however he can. He has coached several of their teams they’ve played on and has volunteered for numerous school activities. He acknowledges how lucky he is to have the luxury of working from home most days so he can be at his children’s school functions. He was also very supportive of having M as my practicum student.
