At the picnic on the field close to the river, Audra sat beside her friends on the blankets they had spread out, sipped mead, and grinned. A springtime afternoon – one that felt more like summer with its warmth – with her friends, their children, and her mother, was just what she needed to raise her spirits.
Audra and Ina created a shady spot by covering by draping a blanket over sticks to shade the new babies from the sun, and they slept. Elen and Dera snacked on berries, then started mashing them to make “jam” for the bread.
“Oh, dear.” Faye frowned. “That’ll be quite the mess.”
“If it is one thing I have learned, it is to let go of the small things,” said Ina. “Enjoy your time with your little ones. That was something I did not do.”

They’d filled a bowl with dirt, rocks, and river water and floated their small toy coracles in it. The boat makers had spent an evening with the children making these toys, and Rory declared soon, he would start building a real one.
“We need a river battle!” said Dillan, spinning his coracle and making whooshing sounds.
Rory picked up one of his carved wooden knights and stuck him in a boat. “I challenge thee, Sir Knight, to a water duel!”
The little girls rolled their eyes while the women sat back and laughed.
After the chatting and playtime ended, everyone settled down and devoured a picnic meal of roast lamb slices, bread, soft cheese, and fried leek rings. As per usual, the boys devoured the offerings, but still had room for sliced strawberries.
The babies grew cranky and the girls said they wanted to go to the library, so Faye, Travana, and Una returned to the castle with their children. Ina and Audra remained behind with Rory. He was still fixated on his toy boats.
Ina gazed at him fondly. “He is so much like you, curious and smart.”
“Yet much quieter.”
“That’s because he is a wise soul in a little boy’s body. I can see
