It is typical when Pa goes to town, for the 9 year old boy to take care of his Mam and the small farm. With his morning chores finished, he heads for the river to do some fishing. There is no telling when his Pa will get back, it could be several days. It usually is. There isn’t much to eat and he is determined to do this duty well. He saw rabbit sign yesterday so he grabs some string and his special rooting stick. With his pole over his shoulder he waves to his Mam and sets off. He takes his time to make sure it is right and strong. Because the coffin is so heavy he decides to put it into the grave empty. Inside the house he washes the blood off his Mam the best he can and wraps the blanket tightly around her securing it with the ropes that were used to bind him. He carefully drags his Mam’s body out to the grave, lovingly placing it into the coffin. The boy nails the lid on and fills in the hole. The sun is just coming up and he is exhausted. He is almost finished. He stops to drink some water from the well watching for signs of his Pa returning. The boy digs up his Mam’s roses and replants them over her grave.
