It is typical when Pa goes to town, for the 9 year old boy to take care of his Mam and the small farm. With his morning chores finished, he heads for the river to do some fishing. There is no telling when his Pa will get back, it could be several days. It usually is. There isn’t much to eat and he is determined to do this duty well. He saw rabbit sign yesterday so he grabs some string and his special rooting stick. With his pole over his shoulder he waves to his Mam and sets off. The river isn’t far so it will only take him about 15 minutes to get there. He has his slingshot and some choice rocks in his back pocket in case he spots a rabbit. We sure can’t let you get away with that.” The boy watches as The Man (The boy never hears his name) pushes his Mam roughly. He backs her up against the table. Mickey moves around the table and grabs her from behind, dragging her onto the table. Laughing The Man pulls out a knife and starts cutting off Mam’s dress. She struggles and kicks at The Man. Mickey hits her hard across the face and holds his hand over her mouth and nose, preventing her from breathing. Her struggles lessen and The Man finishes with the dress baring her completely. “Leave her alone! Don’t touch her!” the boy screams at them. He takes his time to make sure it is right and strong. Because the coffin is so heavy he decides to put it into the grave empty. Inside the house he washes the blood off his Mam the best he can and wraps the blanket tightly around her securing it with the ropes that were used to bind him. He carefully drags his Mam’s body out to the grave, lovingly placing it into the coffin. The boy nails the lid on and fills in the hole. The sun is just coming up and he is exhausted. He is almost finished. He stops to drink some water from the well watching for signs of his Pa returning. The boy digs up his Mam’s roses and replants them over her grave. He waters them, every day until he leaves the farm on his twentieth birthday. The roses thrive. Two days later his Pa rides in on the old mule. The house is clean, not a sign of what took place there. The boy sits on the porch watching him calmly. He dismounts and tries to hand the reins over to his son. The boy makes no move to take them. He just stares at his Pa. “What is wrong with you boy? Take care of the mule, he is tired and hungry. Where did your Mam get
