“Follow me,” she demanded. As we walked down the narrow hall, Ramona raked her long fingernails down the textured wallpapered. The chief followed closely as she led me around her desk to Chandler's closed office door. “After you,” she said gesturing toward the door. Without giving any thought to her gesture, I reached out to turn the door handle. And just as my hand made contact with the decorative knob, I jerked it back with a painful sigh. I couldn't touch it! It was a solid silver knob. I looked to Ramona for her assistance with the door, but she just stood there with a smug grin. “Oh, poor baby... I guess it'll be ladies first,” she said twisting the knob. Ramona pushed the door open, and I followed her into the office where Chandler stood with his hands folded behind his back. He wore a warming smile as if he was about to welcome an old friend. “Chris... It's so nice to be in your company again. “We're not going to hurt you. You are loved here.” The chief – as well as Ramona – developed a confused look. “Come now, Chris. You didn't think I would orphan you just because of your unfortunate condition did you? Never... Once I welcome you into my family you will always be welcome.” He laid his icy arm over my shoulder and gave me a gentle squeeze. And I too was confused. “Chief, I want you to take our friend to my home. He'll be staying with us until his place has been cleaned up. There's no need for him to go through any unnecessary heartache. I want to make him as comfortable as possible.” Turning his attention to me he added, “If you need anything don't hesitate to ask. We are here to help you in this most difficult time.” I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I thought he was supposed to hate me, want to kill me, and detest even the very air that I breathed – I know I certainly felt that way toward him. So what was with the

He looked up at me as I tried to reassure him that he was going to be okay. “Help is on the way.” I could feel the fear in his eyes.
Robert, the security guard, drew his gun, took a deep breath, and headed down a shadowy corridor full of plastic cobwebs, fake blood, and recorded screams. At least one person was dead, and behind any one of these doors might lay another victim -or worse, the killer - waiting for another victim.

Well, yes though it is more symbolic than simple. The protagonist, Luke Chandler (age 7) lives on a cotton farm in Black Oak with his parents and grandparents. The house they live in has never been painted. That means something in rural Arkansas.

The mighty wind clashed against the tall trees and hoisted the delicate leaves up into the heavens above. Only a minuscule of light from above was granted access to the vast lands covered by the grand trees below. Birds flocked from tree to tree scavenging for anything edible that they could clench their beaks on. Their screams echoed bounced from tree to tree and into the night sky as water slowly leaked from the trees like a faulty tap and made a thud when it slapped the surface. Decaying plants filled the air with a smell that could bring a bear to his knees. A thick mist covered the landscape and could scare away any animal that would dare draw near.
