In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford, the protagonist, and General Zaroff, the antagonist, have similar life experiences and beliefs, but their one difference, the will to take a human life for sport, builds the suspense up to Rainsford killing Zaroff for the greater good. Zaroff and Rainsford share many life experiences that majorly impacts their conflict. For example, Rainsford set up three different animal traps to kill Zaroff and Zaroff recognized two of the three immediately because of the similar hunting experiences. Rainsford starts thinking like the General when he is setting up traps such as the Malay Man Catcher and the Burmese tiger pit. When Zaroff is hit by Rainsford’s first trap he says, “I, too, have hunted in Malacca,”(14) here right off the bat if it hadn’t been for Zaroff and Rainsford going to Malacca and learning the Malay Mancatcher then Zaroff might have been killed by Rainsford.
Juan Gonzalez discusses the historical relationship between Puerto Rico and the U.S. in Harvest of an Empire, interestingly enough the author’s family were a part of the surge of Puerto Ricans emigrated to New York in 1946. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris the Spanish-American War came to a close with Puerto Rico now under the control of the U.S. along with Cuba, Guam, and the Philippians. In 1900 the Foraker Act established Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory, but it had less autonomy than when under the control of Spain. The Foraker Act allowed the U.S. to dominate the economy of Puerto Ricans by replacing the peso with the dollar and not allowing for any outside commercial treaties. Challenges were unsuccessful with the dreadful ruling

Puerto Rico’s association with the United States and its metamorphosis began when in 1898 U.S. troops invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. Up until that point, Puerto Rico had remained one of Spain’s last two colonies in the New World. Puerto Rico’s Spanish heritage is seen when “Puerto Rican essayist Antonio Pedreira, writing in the 1930’s, termed the first three centuries of Spanish rule a period of ‘faithful prolongation of the Spanish culture’” (qtd. in Morris 21). Spanish influence is also seen when “without rejecting his ‘Puerto Rican Spanishness,’ the Puerto Rican ‘considered himself a Spaniard from here with ideas and reactions different from those from there’” (qtd.

The once poor nation of Puerto Rico now seems to be a stepping stone for trading in the Caribbean. With its location in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico is a major asset for shipping lanes. One of the main reasons the U.S. wanted to take over this land. Its geographical location is important in helping to move resources around the world, as well as keeping an eye on Cuba. The intention of this essay is to demonstrate to a vision rational, concordant political leader to the Puerto Rican, American and worldwide reality. It responds to the necessity that to the statehood it is necessary to imagine it and to expose it with all the evidence available, since many Puerto Ricans, including many political leaders, do not know like defending it or exposing it before the peculiar ones or our adversaries.
Guerilla warfare and drug gangs in the “favelas of Brazil” pushed many families to emigrate to the United States and Canada; separating families (“Latin America” 3). The people of Latin America love pursuing human contact, so those families that did stay found themselves in the cites. That is because opportunity lied in the city, and no longer on the country-side; therefore, leading to a constant flow of people from rural to urban areas. The author says, “In Latin America, urban culture was not created by industrial growth; it predated it” (“Latin America” 4).
Puerto Rico, a name synonymous with finding it’s identity. Has had its woes in that search of identity. After suffering the colonialism of Spain, Puerto Rico was then won by the US in the Spanish American war. Puerto Ricans, deep-rooted in culture and tradition start the journey of searching for better. In the 1950s, after being a territory of the US for 51 years. We see huge emigration from Puerto Rico to the US. The Puerto Rican government played a crucial role in the Puerto Rican migration after world war II. The emigration numbers sky rocket in the 1950s and there is a reason it did. In this paper, I’ll prove that Puerto Ricans migrated to the US in search of a better life because of the post war economic conditions, population increase,
Puerto Rico, whose word meaning is “rich port” in Spanish, is a beautiful Island located in the middle of the Caribbean. Its strategic location made it a must have territory to the Spaniards who colonized it over four hundred years before the United States took a special interest. It all started in the year 1898, with the Treaty of Paris Puerto Rico now is property of the United States. After centuries of being led by Sevilla and Madrid, Puerto Rico was now forced to look upon Washington. The series of events leading the Spanish-American War changed Puerto Rico permanently. From changing the Island’s name from Porto Rico to Puerto Rico to Americanizing the Puerto Rican people in all ways possible, the acquisition of Puerto Rico from the United States had numerous economic, social and political impacts.
