Both Wilde and Sophocles share similar connections within their plays where the female characters take control away from the men. For example, in both Greek times and the Victorian Era, men are the ones with all the power whereas the women have no freedom at all. In Antigone’s case, she and Ismene have only little freedom due to their royalty but Antigone shows more bravery as she defies Creon’s laws and buries Polyneices. Although her loyalty to her brother causes her own demise, her actions were approved by the people and the gods. The Women in Wilde’s play have similar perspectives of feminism where the women feel in control based on their class and high society.
Antigone takes place just after a war between Antigone’s two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices. Eteocles fought on the side of Thebes whereas Polynices resembled an invader. Afterwards, Eteocles is buried and seen as honorable. However, Polynices is denied a proper burial because he is considered a traitor to Thebes. In this play, Sophocles uses Antigone and Creon as foils by characterizing Antigone as a martyr and Creon as a tyrant to urge the reader to realize that one’s own morals are more significant than the decrees of any government.
I'm doing this essay on the story antigone by sophocles. Antigones' brother polyneices rebels against creon and the city of thebes while her other brother etheocles is a leader in the thebian army. the two brothers battle and kill each other. creon decrees that if anyone buries polyneices they will be killed. creon only buries ethiocles because he is a respected leader in then thebian army but he leaves polyneices body laying on the ground to be eaten by wild animals. antigone gives polyneices a full funeral ceremony and buries him but she gets caught by a guard. antigone is then brought before creon and interogated. he decides to go ahead and kill her, but antigone is creons' son haemon's bride to be. after he has antigone killed his son tries
From the drama play ‘Antigone’ the Guard who was chosen to tell king Creon about the body that was buried contrasted with Creon in the way he sees things like morals and what is right or just.
Antigone or Creon? In an idealized world, there would be a perfect divide between good and evil. Questions about what is wrong and what is right in the world would be non-existent; decisions would be made methodically and objectively. However, as the symbol of Ying and Yang illustrates, the world is not ideal. Balance is required . Good cannot thrive without evil and what is right cannot be realized without recognizing what is wrong. Antigone and Creon represent the Ying and Yang. Therefore, there is no hero in Sophocles' Antigone. Antigone's rash decision to do what is required by her Gods is driven Creon's demonstration of unwavering strength as required of the people's leader. Everything that occurs within the play after those decisions
“You there you with your face bent down towards the ground, what do you say? Do you deny you did this or admit it.” -Creon “I admit I did it. I won’t deny that.” -Antigone (Line(s) 498-500) Antigone’s words, actions and ideas contrast with Creon’s character to the point of these two characters having conflicting motivations. These conflicting motivations cause the characteristics of Antigone, Teiresias and Haemon to be highlighted within Creon’s character. In the end, these conflicting motivations develop Creon as a tragic hero by his flaws, hubris causes his downfall. He will not listen to anyone, he’s stubborn and his pride is too great, and the character interactions advance the plot when Creon sentences Antigone to death, after she’s sent off, he later realizes she didn’t deserve that but when he realized it then it was already too late.
This play is ultimately concerned with one person defying another person and paying the price. Antigone went against the law of the land, set by the newly crowned King Creon. Antigone was passionate about doing right by her brother and burying him according to her religious beliefs even though Creon deemed him a traitor and ordered him to be left for the animals to devour. Creon was passionate about being king and making his mark from his new throne. Although they differed in their views, the passion Creon and Antigone shared for those opinions was the same, they were equally passionate about their opposing views. Creon would have found it very difficult to see that he had anything in common with Antigone however as he appears to be
A tragic hero is noble and has a personal flaw; the one character that fits this is Antigone. She went against the kings rules by burying her brother, she knew her consequence, and as Antigone faced death she wasn’t scared of it at all. On the other hand, Antigone was also impatient.
In the Sophocles’ play Antigone the character Antigone is very different than Creon in many ways. Antigone and Creon had their fair share of arguments and fighting. Antigone and Creon’s conflicts contribute to the development of Creon as a tragic hero. In the Sophocles play Antigone, the play is about the aftermath of a civil war. Oedipus sons Eteocles and Polyneices, kill each other.
Jacey Chotto AP Literature and Composition Mrs. McLellan February 26, 2024. Gods vs. humanity The short story “Antigone” by Sophocels explores personal duty and the role decisions have on our life; Creon, who is the antagonist of this story, has ideals differerning from its protagonist’s divine duty bound ones. Creon’s belief that his laws come before the precedent laws the gods have set creates a major conflict that affects Creon's family, and leads to his downfall. Creon's pride and unwillingness to put aside his own beliefs show the detrimental effect being headstrong can have.
In the story, the relationship between Antigone and Creon is complicated. They were related but did not like each other. They both were very stubborn because they couldn't get there way. Had they found a way to resolve their differences and compromise or even empathize with the other person’s physical and mental state, the story might have ended differently. The dramatic tension between the two characters is based on Creon’s actions in regard to Antigone’s brothers, who were sons of Odepidus.
A tragic hero is when an individual is of high power or is at good standing and suddenly has a “downfall” (Ades). Antigone and Creon were both royal and both had a downfall. Both characters went through a tragedy that affected them greatly. The death of Antigone’s brothers affected her. In Antigone the better tragic hero is Creon because he was a person of high estate, fell from his power, and his pride was too high that he didn’t realize how he was acting, and what his actions were causing.
In Sophocles’ play Antigone, almost all of the characters are doomed to a tragic end. Hubris, excessive pride, is a player in the downfalls of the two central characters: Antigone and Creon. Although hubris was the cause of both of their downfall, both characters reacted to reasoning of their motives differently from one another. In terms of reason, the one who has logical and physical motives in their decisions is considered the most reasonable. In this case, Antigone is the character deaf to reason, while Creon is the character too easily swayed by reason.
There have been many tragic stories throughout history and all of them had showed us tragic heroes. One of the famous tragedies is Antigone, a story about a girl who tried to bury her so-called traitorous brother Polyneices. To me the tragic hero in this story is infact the king of Thebes, Creon. In the story there is evidence how Creon is the tragic hero, because he has a supreme amount of pride, a strong sense of commitment, and transfiguration throughout this story.
As a sequel to Oedipus Rex, Sophocles writes the greek tragedy of Antigone following the ruling family of Thebes and its new ruler, Creon. Due to the battle over the throne of Thebes, both sons of Oedipus victoriously die, leaving their uncle Creon to take the throne. As the new ruler, Creon establishes his first law to not bury the body of the traitor, his nephew Polyneices and condemns death as a punishment to anyone who tries to bury him. Tension and conflict rises as his niece Antigone rightfully buries her brother against his law, leading for Creon to be put to the test: will he pardon his niece who is rightfully serving the gods or keep his power and authority by sticking to his law? Antigone by Sophocles is a story about family, power
After reading Antigone by Sophocles, readers may believe that the two main characters, Antigone and Creon, seem like polar opposites. However, after digging a little deeper, readers are able to come to a final conclusion that although both characters may not always see eye to eye, they carry a number of similar traits. The characters seem to be so alike that it results in the two to constantly disagree, leading towards the two to continuously find new differences and flaws within each other. They don’t exactly have the same views, for example, Antigone seems to put family over everything else while Creon’s loyalty is more concerned with the well-being of Thebes. However, the two characters do have many similar internal characteristics. They are independent, confident, and stubborn when they want to be.
