Anderson (2012) suggests leaders acquire power and focus on empowering others, as well as motivating and inspiring others. Leaders are influential, sincere, and take risks. Managers are given a formal role and are assigned specific duties with definite responsibilities. Managers plan, organize, coordinate, and control (Kelly & Crawford, 2008). Clearly there is a significant amount of overlap between leaders and managers. In order to effectively lead and manage this new facility, it is my ambition to incorporate the best characteristics of both. Effective application of both skill sets may assist me to provide a balanced and productive work environment.

Within any large organization new employees are required to attend some form of orientation. Within the United State Navy, there are several types of orientation depending on ones rank and job. For instance, enlisted Sailors attend a seven week orientation better known as Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois and officers attend ODS or OCS in Newport, Rhode Island. Even though, all three orientations or Boot Camps vary in length, they all have some form of introductory leadership training. However, because the United States Navy realizes this is not enough they have developed several follow on leadership courses to be taken through ones Naval career such as: Division Officer Leadership Course (DIVOLC) targeted for junior line officer, not staff officers; Department Head Leadership Course (DHLC) targeted for all officers, typically Lieutenant Commander (O-4) and above; Executive Officer Leadership Course (XOLC) for those going to designated XO billets; Commanding Officer Leadership Course (COLC) for those taking command for the first time; and Major Command Leadership Course (MCLC) designed for Captain’s (O-6) or above taking command of regions.
My leadership role as co-president of National Honor Society has affected me greatly in the two years I have been apart of the organization. The organization has taught and grown characteristics, such as leadership, cooperation, and determination, in myself, and in turn I have spread to others. The organization has also shown me the importance of volunteering, and how I can directly contribute to the bettering of my community through volunteering. During my time in the National Honor Society I have completed over 130 hours of community service. This year specifically I have been placed in charge of the recycling program and the road cleanup program. The recycling program consists of placing bins in each classroom for paper and plastic products,

What defines a leader? One may say a leader is a person with many titles that distinguish them as having an important role. I however see a leader as much more than a title but rather as a person who makes an impact. A leader in my eyes is one who is an inspiration, shows care for the position they have, is determined, and a team player with empathy and compassion towards all. As future pharmacists, it is of the utmost importance that these qualities carry into the profession so that we may become a better provider to our patients and a more trustworthy part of the healthcare community. With the various leadership roles throughout my life both in the community and on the campus of MCPHS University, I have strengthened and developed the qualities of a leader that make for a future pharmacist ready to improve the profession for the better.

This level measures the participants’ overall satisfaction. Reaction was assessed through an evaluation form provided at the end of each class session. The results were overwhelmingly positive: 99% of the participants would recommend the classes to a colleague, and 99% of the participants agreed that both the classes and instructor(s) were effective. This metric is representative of the 2015 Emerging Leaders Program participants who completed an evaluation at the end of each class, and is a weighted average of all six classes.
In addition, leadership itself can be described in various forms and through the highlight of different skill sets, but the one thing that all definitions have in common is that “leadership involves influencing the attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and feelings of other people” Spector’s work (as cited in Curtis, de Vries, & Sheerin, 2011, p.306). When the skill set of a leader is compared to that of a manager, true differences are noted. Some of these key differences are apparent even in the approach utilized to reach the desired goals. While a manager directs, a leader transforms, a manager sustains and a leader improves, a manager controls, a leader motivates, a manager’s focus is on short-term goals and a leader’s is long-term based, managers ask how and when, while
Spring break of my junior year, I attended a leadership camp called RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). My dad was the president of rotary at the time so I pretty much didn’t have an option in going. I wasn’t too excited about spending my spring break at a leadership camp with weirdos I didn’t know. The camp site was up in the mountains of Ojai so we had to leave my house pretty early. My dad had to stop and pick up some kids from my school that were also going. When they got in the car, I was annoyed and tired. Everyone said hi to me and I just looked at them and put my head phones back in and went to sleep.
