Crime Scene Monologue

The victim laid in the upstairs bedroom, smeared with blood. Their limbs had been amputated harshly, and a thin cut ran across the base of the woman's throat. I stood with a couple other officers from my squad, examining the crime scene. We'd been called a few minutes earlier, when the woman's neighbors found her. It looked like she had been dead for a couple days, with flies beginning to swarm the body. The most disturbing part of the case wasn’t the amputated body, but the computer downstairs. Burned into the screen were the words 'you're next'. Those same words were displayed on two other victim's computers, but the victims were all killed differently. I realized I had zoned out again, and everyone was staring at me. I cleared my throat and said, "Okay, thank you." The coroner nodded before heading back to the van that was supposed to escort the body back to the local morgue for further inspection. I turned and walked back up to the house, trying to compose myself. The flashbacks happened a lot. Not all of them were about my abusive boyfriend (who I wanted to be an ex), Derek, but most of them were. Brett liked to get on my case about them, but I never have told him anything and I was determined never to. I was afraid that if I told anyone about Derek that he would come after me...and possibly kill me. He had made that threat once before. "Jenny what is it?" I asked the moment I saw her at the computer. Her face was a mixture of shock and wonder as she typed at her own laptop, which was connected to the fried computer belonging to the victim. She barely acknowledged me when she spoke. "It's the same with the other computers. Everything is fried so I cannot snoop to see what happened right before the computer was shut down.
