This essay will outline how crime theories are able to assist in recognizing the causes of criminal activity, as well as demonstrating two criminological theories to two particular crimes. Overviews of trends, dimensions and victim/offenders characteristics of both crime groups will be specified. The two particular crimes that will be demonstrated throughout this essay are; Violent Crime (focusing on Assault) being linked with social learning theory and White Collar crime (focusing on terrorism) being linked to General Strain theory. In criminology, determining the motive of why people commit crimes is crucial. Over the years, many theories have been developed and they continue to be studied as criminologists pursue the best answers in eventually diminishing certain types of crime including assaults and terrorism, which will be focused on.

In 1990s, violent crime plummeted fifty-one percent, property crime fell forty-three percent, homicides are down fifty-four percent compared to previous decade (Chettiar, 2015). Increased police in the 1990s brought down crime by about five percent, police employment increased dramatically in the 1990s, rising twenty-eight percent. One example of state policy that were put in place in the 1990s to address crime was the 1994 Crime Bill, which provided funding for 100,000 new local officers (Chettiar, 2015). Police techniques can be effective in reducing crime especially in the 1990s. Thanks to digital revolution in the 1990s, police forces started using computers to target criminals. But as of today, incarceration rate has increased with six percent of property crime decline in the 1990s and sadly only one percent of property crime

Strain theory is described as the cause of crime due to the social class or environment in which a person grows up in. In our society, people strive to obtain wealth, education, materialistic possessions and power. Due to the environment lower social class people are born into, they are unable to obtain these aspirations through legal means. Feelings of frustration lead to strain and can cause these people to resort to external and illegal means to obtain these resources or lead them to abusing drug substances in an effort to feel better.

Just in the last decade, there has been a 29% increase in crimes committed against residents and a 22% increase for business losses due to online crimes (Meyer). Another large issue with technology is that they monitor an individualś every move, for example, a phone company, AT&T, was monitoring their customers phones to be able to “use your individual Web browsing information, like the search terms you enter and the Web pages you visit, to tailor ads and offers to your interests” (Silverman 282). Although the increase in such crimes can potentially cause many issues and obstacles for an individual, they do not physically harm anyone. Such crimes as internet fraud and any other crime that can be committed online, are all fixable and can be prevented. There are security systems that can help protect against frauds and prevent any more from occurring, which makes this issue much less crucial to stop. It is also possible to contact police and bankers to stop this from occurring and they can help you regain all of your losses. The government also has the NSA, the National Security Agency, to monitor all internet movements, which helps stop many of these issues. New technology has helped prevent an immense amount of street crimes, that without the internet, would have only continued to rise, while millions of people would have continued to be murdered.

At one point in our lives we have felt a sense of inequity or strain. There are people struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table for their children. But there are some people who take the feeling and run with it, with no thought to who they may be hurting. They commit digital crimes such as identity theft, credit card fraud, or any other type of internet fraud scheme. Since the crime is committed via cyberspace versus on the street, victims have become faceless, therefore allowing digital criminals less incentive to feel guilt.

There are four major categories in computer crime. The first is the computer as a target. Then would come the computer as an instrument of a crime. Followed by computer as an incidental to a crime. Not to mention crimes associated with the prevalence of computers. These four major categories are what contributes to digital crimes, involving the worldwide web.

Alcohol and drugs can trigger you to do stupid things that you will later regret in life or make you do things that you never wanted to do. People can learn from previous experience. Education is a big part of committing crimes. Education is important because it will let you know the right from wrong in life. Lack of school gives an anti-social development. Also, when don’t have any education it’s going to be hard for you to find a job that would pay you good or to find a job that you like. Its helps people overcome any situation. These social reasons trigger people to commit crime.
