I choose this class because not only was it a requirement for me to finish the Shocker Program, it was a way for me to learn more about how criminals are handled and how agencies within the system bring justice.
In my junior year of high school, a friend introduced to me the show Criminal Minds. At first, I was hesitant to watch it because it might not be something I want to hear. I don’t want to hear sad stories about peopling getting raped or losing their loved one. After my friend kept nagging to me how good the show was, I started to watch it. By the end of the first episode, I was hooked. I finished all 10 seasons on Netflix by the summer of last year. The show was amazing, even though some of it is fiction, such as what the BAU really does. The show focused on the criminology and psychology of criminals. They analyzed the crime scene, previous victims, and the environment. The characters within the show were able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and solve. Not only that, they analyzed the psychology of the criminals. They analyzed why this certain criminal did what he/she did and what their goal was. To me, this was interesting and fun.

The criminal justice system is composed of three parts – Police, Courts and Corrections – and all three work together to protect an individual’s rights and the rights of society to live without fear of being a victim of crime. According to merriam-webster.com, crime is defined as “an act that is forbidden or omission of a duty that is commanded by public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law.” When all the three parts work together, it makes the criminal justice system function like a well tuned machine.
