In Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, the theme of duality and the conflict between personal desires and morals is present throughout much of the novel. There are dual conflicts: one external between a disillusioned individual and his world, and the other internal between an isolated soul and his inner thoughts. It is the internal conflict in the main character, Raskolnikov, that is the focused on for much of the novel. The first of Rodya’s two sides is his intellectual side. This side of rodya is inhumane, and exhibiting extreme self-will and power. This is the side of him that comes up with his theory. The duality of characters in the book was not only limited to rodya, but also to his best friend Razumihin. Razumihin is charming, sweet, and loving, he is responsible for much of the comic relief in the novel. Razumihin is fairly steady to begin with, but grows even more so over the course of the novel. Like Raskolnikov, he dropped out of college, but he was making a living doing translation for books. The start of razumihin change occurs when he see his drunken side and how he shouted “louder than ever” (202) at dounia and the mom.

The title of the book was a great foreshadowing of the book. in the first book, the readers do not expect rodya to actually act upon his crime. the readers do not yet get a clue he will until his dream of the horse being butchered by her owner. the Axe that was used in the murder of the horse, was the ultimate weapon used to kill the pawnbroker. crime and punishment go well together ann dit was almost like a foreshadow of sonias and rodya future relationship they would develop. It signifies a process that we've come to expect: we do something bad; we get in trouble. Punishment follows crime. Crime comes before punishment.
