CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION
This entry explores the substantial growth in online criminal justice education and the implications of this growth for students and faculty. Limitations and criticisms of such education are also discussed.
Despite the reservations of many academicians and administrators who doubted that criminal justice could be taught from a distance, online criminal justice education flourishes as a popular choice for today’s students. In an era marked by fears over cyber-crime, terrorist attacks, riots and mass shootings, there is no shortage of talented people that want to make a difference and to help make the world safer, be it through serving in law enforcement, becoming a security expert or gaining specialized knowledge

Once course content is uploaded by instructors to a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Blackboard, Moodle or Angel, the entire class can be contained online within a fairly limited space. This means that written comments or lectures from the instructor, Power Point slides, streaming videos, pod casts, and other kinds of content can be freely accessed by students at any time. A popular feature of many courses is the discussion board which encourages asynchronous communications with faculty and student peers. Occasionally, synchronous activity may be required, including group work or group chat. It is strongly recommended that students read syllabi carefully before committing to a particular class, and that they speak directly with the instructor about the amount of time that the class will be engaged in synchronous activities such as group …show more content…
As Houston-area professors Clete Snell and Everette Penn have noted in their work, experienced teachers confess that online teaching is much more time intensive than teaching in the residential classroom. Consequently a reduction in teaching load or release time is recommended as an instructor develops an online course. Such a policy that allows for a reduced teaching load will allow sufficient time for the instructor to become oriented to online learning. The instructor in training needs orientation to effective teaching methods and guidance in how to operate the LMS that the university selected. Then, there is the burdensome task of preparing, adapting and transferring materials from traditional classes to the
society finds itself engulfs in such an interdisciplinary endeavor called criminal justice. The criminal justice student may argue that it is not systematic but rather unavoidable. It remains plausible to think that the criminal justice organizations share a common set of goals and philosophies when it involves socialization, power and authority.
Concepts like crime prevention, authority, professionalism and discretion have evolved in modern law enforcement since the twentieth century. August Vollmer instituted university training as a tool for young officers in training and under Vollmer’s teachings; O.W. Wilson pioneered the use of advanced training for officers and is also known for the start of criminal justice as an academic field. Wilson was also instrumental in applying modern management and administrative techniques to policing. Vollmer’s drive for educational innovations and improvements has changed policing tremendously and is still practiced heavily upon in today’s modern law enforcement society.
Ever since I was a little girl I’ve always dreamed about working in the field of law. Growing up my favorite TV shows were and still is “The First 48” and “Criminal Minds”. Both shows portray investigating, administration, and problem-solving, which are three components I will be assisting in my career. The last three years I’ve attended Tennessee State University, I’ve came to the conclusion that my major being “Criminal Justice” is meant for my life. Of course Criminal Justice is a broad topic with various occupations and skills you’ll have to select and understand. The list of duties, responsibilities, salary, employment change & outlook in the next year, unemployment rate, and education in the field are essentials one needs to be successful

Criminal Justice is a wide and varied field, with jobs ranging from police officer to analyst to court reporter. Each occupation helps the community in some way, whether that be helping protect citizen from criminals, or analyzing the evidence that will help catch criminals. Despite the vast differences between jobs in the Criminal Justice field, each has one thing in common: Criminal Justice workers cannot do their jobs correctly without the necessary funding. The issue of funding affects some careers, like police officers, more than others, but lack of funding still poses a large threat to the entire field. This paper will examine five sources that discuss the lack of funding in the Criminal Justice field, as well as how various people and organizations are affected by the budget cuts and the limitations of these sources.
State and local law enforcement agencies face several challenges including the lack of resources, expertise, training, and funding to solve cyber crime. Of these problems, are the growing concerns of the local and state officials about the threats made relating to the protection of computer infrastructures at the federal level. Local officers are not having the capacity or understanding of computer crimes necessary to properly investigate offenses such as computer and electric crimes and fraud and theft crimes by digital technology. (Taylor, 2011) Having education and appropriate training is crucial in the investigation process to gain an upper hand in fighting digital crime. In addition, state and local law enforcement expressed concerns about resource constraints and apprehension regarding expertise and jurisdictional
Cordner (2010) argues, in “The U.S. needs a national Police university,” that criminal justice curriculum at universities all over America is lacking substantial knowledge about policing. And due to this, he proposed a brand new national police institution for mid- level police executives. Over the years, knowledge regarding professional policing topics has expanded, yet the police command staff are uninformed on police strategies and programs. Our current system for police training is fragmented says, Cordner (2010). The U. S. needs a universal higher educational system for police CEOs – chiefs, sheriffs, commissioners, superintendent, directors, etc.
One major advantage in having a college education is proficient in technology Law enforcement has changed dramatically in the last 30 years with the vast growing of technology. Adoption of new technology, computer skills are a basic requirement to function and communicate in a modern technical society. Understanding forensic science and how this evidence can strengthen a case, as well as the technical skills to understand ways to fight cybercrime, require educated detectives using a multi-disciplined approach. Modern police departments need highly educated people capable or leading change in an evolving technology-oriented society. With the trend of citizens with video cameras watching uniformed police officers perform their duties, research indicates that educated officers will act with more discretion, tolerance, and restraint when confronting resistance. By police officers continuing their education they make themselves a current
The criminal justice field is an ever evolving field. As today’s technology changes so does the way the criminal justice field interacts with that technology. As our society changes the technology that we use will also be altered to fit the situation. The barriers that come along can affect how the criminal justice field interprets what to do next. The basis of the criminal justice system is to protect and serve the community as a whole. Keeping up with the changes in society is a vital part of our
My future career goal is to become a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Bethel University’s Master in Criminal Justice program is a perfect fit for me, as It allows me to continue my education while maintaining a full-time career. I sought a program that was flexible with my shift work, and I was impressed by the accreditations and educational philosophy. The courses offered in this program will help me grow as a professional and advance in my
Good afternoon, I am interested in teaching some on-line Criminal Justice classes and wanted to reach out to you to see if you had any opportunities for meat Vol. State that I may be qualified to teach. I have attached my resume and other documents of interest. I have not as of yet completed my Master's, but I am close to the end of my program with my last day of class being the 11th of March, 2018.
I am Kelly Itive, a final year bachelor degree student in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Science in Criminology at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom. Having enjoyed crime-related activities in both the academic and community settings, it is with enthusiasm that I pursue a career in criminal justice studies. An important part of this pursuit is attending graduate school in order to obtain the necessary knowledge and to define my area of interest. As stated by Albert Einstein, “if you want a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” However, my intention of studying a postgraduate qualification in criminal justice is to have a broader knowledge in the fields of crime, enhancing my ability to critically
Law enforcement like much of the economy and society has had to adapt to the rapidly changing Atmosphere of the technological advances. To counter these advances, education has served in the forefront to combating the technological sophistication that is rapidly sweeping the workforce. The need and desire to remain competitive with the technology that we have is a need that can be satisfied with more education. Much like technology, education has benefits elsewhere in the equation of remaining competitive. Education on the higher tiered level provides a professionalism to accompany by the demands placed on students during their scholastic years of study. Activities required by many professors in the higher education
Before this class all my knowledge had come from years of reading true crime stories and watching documentaries on serial cases and unsolved cases. I had never had any formal training within the Criminal Justice file the two most important things I learned throughout the past ten weeks has been how to use my critical thinking skills to analyze crimes from all aspects of the criminal justice system, and how to dig deep in researching cases and case law. I can honestly say, I am proud to have met the outcomes in my work, but do still wish to continue learning how to reference past cases and case laws in more depth for my future endeavors.
