CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION

This entry explores the substantial growth in online criminal justice education and the implications of this growth for students and faculty. Limitations and criticisms of such education are also discussed.

Despite the reservations of many academicians and administrators who doubted that criminal justice could be taught from a distance, online criminal justice education flourishes as a popular choice for today’s students. Once course content is uploaded by instructors to a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Blackboard, Moodle or Angel, the entire class can be contained online within a fairly limited space. This means that written comments or lectures from the instructor, Power Point slides, streaming videos, pod casts, and other kinds of content can be freely accessed by students at any time. A popular feature of many courses is the discussion board which encourages asynchronous communications with faculty and student peers. Occasionally, synchronous activity may be required, including group work or group chat. It is strongly recommended that students read syllabi carefully before committing to a particular class, and that they speak directly with the instructor about the amount of time that the class will be engaged in synchronous activities such as group …show more content…

As Houston-area professors Clete Snell and Everette Penn have noted in their work, experienced teachers confess that online teaching is much more time intensive than teaching in the residential classroom. Consequently a reduction in teaching load or release time is recommended as an instructor develops an online course. Such a policy that allows for a reduced teaching load will allow sufficient time for the instructor to become oriented to online learning. The instructor in training needs orientation to effective teaching methods and guidance in how to operate the LMS that the university selected.
