I believe that we are currently living in a democratic awakening focused on the poor and vulnerable in American society. Until recently there has been no organized movement against the multileveled assault on the poor and vulnerable in American society, despite the heroic work of a few. However as our society awakens, more and more Americans realize that our Criminal Justice system is broken and still serves as a system of bondage, rather than rehabilitation. This indifference continues to promote the systemic breakdown of black and poor communities devastated by single parent households, mass unemployment, social neglect, economic abandonment, and intense police surveillance. Previously working on the front lines of law enforcement, I witnessed firsthand the unequal use of state and federal power to incarcerate hundreds of poor, black, males in the name of a the “War on Drugs.” Looking back into the history of our nation we can trace this unconscionable treatment and control of blacks from slavery and Jim Crow to today’s use of mass incarceration. In fact if you were to look beneath the surface of our current political system one would see the structures of a racial caste system, admittedly created by neoconservatives and neoliberals in an effort to disguise the depths of black suffering. Currently, this system has persisted under both Democratic and Republican administrations from the 1980’s to present day. Though criminological research and descriptive statistics, I hope to work with policy makers and those within law enforcement to continue and awaken this dark and ugly reality that has been in place for decades.
