Cigarettes are the number one cause of death in the U.S. and yet they are still on the shelves. People know the damage tobacco does to the body, and yet they still continue to smoke, chew, and sniff it. Cigarettes and tobacco products needs to be criminalized. Smoking is the number one cause of cancer in the United States. About 50 million people smoke cigarettes in the United States. Cigarettes are made up of dried tobacco leaves and other things to make up for the flavor. Scientists have found up to 3,000 compounds in tobacco and cigarette smoke. With the total 3,000 compounds, there are about sixty carcinogens. There are a numerous amount of bad chemicals found in cigarettes. Most cigarettes have eight to nine mg of nicotine, though only one mg is transferred to the smoker. Nicotine increases the heart rate, raises the blood pressure and causes blood clotting to the smoker. The most important fact about nicotine is that it has no medical value. Other drugs like marijuana, heroine, and cocaine have no medical value as well but for some reason, cigarettes are legal in the US. An interesting fact that many people do not know is that nicotine, the addicting drug in cigarettes, is more addicting then marijuana, heroine, and cocaine. There has not been one reported death due to marijuana. In 1988, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that nicotine is just as addictive as heroin and cocaine. A "hit" of nicotine reaches the brain in seven seconds, twice as fast as heroin injected into the vein. And still the cigarette is still legal. Why would the government legalize something this toxic horrifying and deadly? Maybe because they benefit from it. The government and people’s excuses for legalizing tobacco is that is freedom and choice and that they choose their own fate. Yes that maybe true, but second-hand smoke also does harm on people as well. In the U.S., 3,000 people die each year from secondhand smoke-related lung cancer.
That is the only reason why cigarettes are legal. The government makes billions of dollars a year from selling cigarettes. About 25% of the cost of a pack of cigarettes goes to federal and local revenue. They
Cigarettes and other tobacco products should be made illegal because of the economic effects, addictive properties, secondhand smoke, and can lead to disease and/or death.
Cigarettes are a big killer in America. They kill many Americans a year. It also lead many Americans to diseases such as cancer. Stand up the next time you see someone smoking tell them that smoking kills. Stand up and help quit
One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.
Tobacco is highly addictive and tobacco companies and friends alike utilize children and adult’s ignorance to the drug to promote it. Smoking imposes many burdens onto other people that are non-smokers. Exposure to second hand smoke is wrong and by making a harmful decision not only for yourself but for others as well shows ignorance and the fact that you do not care for anyone around you. Their health and well being is just as important
Why are cigarettes still being made knowing the harm that cigarettes do to the human body? In the United States, smoking is the leading cause of premature preventable death and disease in the United States. For an average male who smokes cigarettes tale about 13.2 years of their lives. For average women, cigarettes take about 14.5 years of their lives. 480,000 Americans each year die from smoking cigarettes. Not only do people die from smoking cigarettes, but more than 41,000 people die each year from the exposure to secondhand smoke (Burden of Tobacco Use in the U.S). 9 out of 10 smokers start before the age of 18, which needs to be put to a stop. Everyone's life is at risk when its comes to smoking and inhaling the smoke. We have all had the exposure to cigarette smoke, and every time the chances of us getting affected by the smoke rise every time. Smoking should be illegal because smoking causes damage to every organ in the human body, there are at least 70 chemicals that cause cancer (Health Risks of Secondhand Smoke), and how many people are affected and even killed from smoking.
Why should cigarettes be illegal? That is a great question. Tobacco smoke is a mix of over 7,000 chemicals. Cigarettes take away to many lives, can harm the people around you, and cost many Americans their money, time, and health . Honestly, I have a very strong opinion on this topic, because I've seen most of these effects first hand with my family. Let me explain myself...
Do you or someone you know smoke cigarettes? Do they know what comes with taking in those pleasurable puffs? Many don’t, that is why cigarette manufacturers ought to have more said about what is being done to these death sticks. Numerous people don’t know that the tobacco industry adjusts the nicotine levels in cigarettes to make it harder for people to quit, add ammonia to speed up the transfer of nicotine to the brain, and the industry, as a whole, has to replace those smokers who have quit or who are now dead (tobaccofree.com). With all the health risks associated with tobacco products, the ultimate risk of cancer and death, the planting, harvesting, and distribution of tobacco products, especially cigarettes, should be illegal in the United States.
Surprised, criminalized and taxed into submission. Tobacco was once the cash crop of our great nation, upon which are original founders made their mark on history. Yet since the upper-middle class set their sights to smoking in the 1970’s, it has become demonized and socially unacceptable. Furthermore, with the increase of “sin taxes”, tobacco is one of the highest taxed commodities in the United States. The overarching question is, should the government be so heavily involved in the private affairs of responsible adults? No, they should not.
It is estimated that approximately 5.5 trillion cigarettes are produced worldwide each year and are consumed by over 1.1 billion people, which is one-sixth of the world population. Cigarettes are diseases stored in a wrapped package with a bow on it ready be sold. Cigarettes shouldn 't be legal any longer because of the deaths and illnesses it causes. Such as throat and lung cancer emphysema and bronchitis.
I believe that making tobacco illegal will be very beneficial to American society. Tobacco is well known to cause cancer and has a very high mortality rate. When tobacco is chewed, it can lead to the bottom lip to be completely cut off. It causes second hand smoke, so for example, babies may smell the cancer-producing tobacco and can have an illness that was caused by the smoke of the tobacco product. The illegalization of tobacco will only help younger generations of people to not be addicted to tobacco. There are no medical benefits of smoking or chewing tobacco. Whereas marijuanas has many medical benefits. Marijuana helps to slow down the cancer-cells in the bodies and can help kill the cancer-cells in the body. It can help with people who have seizures by calming them down and
The fact that cigarette production and sales are still legal in today's world is an anomaly. A while ago cigarette smoking was advertised and done everywhere. People thought that smoking was what everyone was doing and that it made them look sexy; now no one thinks that smoking is cool because of all the negative things it causes. It is understandable that some elderly folk are still addicted to cigarettes because they did not know any better decades ago when smoking was normal, but it is ludicrous that some still smoke after years of proof that cigarettes are awful for people. There are many commercials to prevent or stop people from smoking. Cigarette production and sales should be made illegal for the reason that smoking
Due to the nicotine in cigarettes, they are considered a drug. Nicotine is known as the used addictive drug drugs, once it is inhaled, within ten seconds of inhalation, the nicotine has reached the brain. The main reason smokers even use tobacco is because nicotine is so fast acting, making it so addictive. The more nicotine a person consumes the higher the toxic effect will
One might say that most people at some point in their lives want to look cool. It is a common concern, especially among young people. After all, who does not want to feel accepted among his or her peers? Including young people, other audiences like adults are more concerned with simply feeling good. As an adult, life can get very stressful and people want a way to relax and take the edge off things. What many believe solutions to these problems include things such as alcohol and tobacco, and Marijuana increasing as of more recently. Dating back ages ago, various tobacco products have been uncovered or created, paving their way into popularity and subsequent frequent recreational use. As of the early 20th century, cigarettes have boomed in popularity and it was the “hip” thing to do. Santa, doctors, and even babies advertised for big tobacco companies. Looking back at vintage advertisements from the eras like the 1920s and throughout the 1950s, one can make the connections of how mainstream tobacco cigarettes were although little research was conducted about how they effect health. As of today, extensive research has been made and many actions & campaigns have shown that there is more than meets the eye, and that cigarettes are not as great as they are embellished to be. All of that leads me to say the production and selling of traditional tobacco cigarettes should be made illegal.
Should the production of cigarette be legal? Cigarettes are responsible for millions of deaths all over the planet. Therefore, it remains the leading cause of lung cancer, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), emphysema and chronic bronchitis. For this purpose, why is the production of cigarettes remains legal? Although people may have the right to smoke cigarettes, the production of cigarettes should be illegal on account it causes deadly diseases, second hand smoke, addiction and pollution.
It is estimated that 36.5 million adults smoke in the United States of America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). A cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals and 70 of those can cause cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). When someone decides to smoke a cigarette, they are not only choosing to allow those toxins into their body but are imposing all those same toxins on anyone around them. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers and is considered more dangerous then smoking the cigarette (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). Every year 480,000 people in the United States of America die because of cigarette smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Why has this deadly habit become such a casual part of the American life? This habit is not only harmful to the person smoking, but is hurting everyone around them. It may be their decision to smoke and cause damage to their own bodies but when they decide to smoke in public they are infringing on the rights of everyone around them right to protect their health. Smoking should be made illegal because it is not only harmful to the smokers but also causes harm to fetuses in utero, developing children and any other adults who may breathe that smoke in.
