Where the Two Meet
Criminology is where criminal justice and Sociology meet and come together. Sociology is a social science where the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society happen. Criminology is also a social science that studies crime and criminal behavior. Sociologists, by studying society and relationships, are able to determine the thoughts and actions of individuals or criminals. Each science can relate to other sciences and Criminology relates to Psychology, Sociology and more. Sociology and Criminology both contribute to society. Every day were faced with new and bigger issues and as Sociologists, it is up to them to understand why and figure out the issues at hand and how to deal with them.

Another social issue that is a problem with in society today would be opinions. People are allowed to have a difference of opinion. We are all able to believe different and not think the same and still live in harmony. There needs to be an understanding and respect in difference of opinions. On the other hand, Criminology is about the crime and criminals in society. It involves law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Criminal justice and Criminology are related fields, but are not the same things. Criminal justice focuses more on upholding social control and Criminology is the study of the crimes and criminals. Whereas, both are just as important. Criminology, with the help of other social sciences, go deep within the criminal and the crime to get to the bottom of what they are thinking, what has made them do it, why they did it, what is next, and also how to stop it and how to prevent it from happening again. Criminology also deals with issues in the field. Some of these issues involving Criminology might be, capital punishment, what is illegal and what is not, sentencing, maintaining social order, is Criminology gender blind, who makes criminal law, does crime pay, if so what and to who and the list continues. As you begin researching and asking yourself these questions, you become aware of all the
When criminologists build criminal profiles, they think about how the killer gained access to the victim, what the killer did to the victim, if the killer tried to cover his or her tracks and how, what about the victim attracted the killer to target them, and what motive or fantasy drove the killer to hurt the victim how and where they did.
Criminology is the scientific study of the nature, extent, cause, and control of criminal behavior (Siegel 4). Criminology is not just understanding criminal actions but also studying how to correct and prevent crime, overall. There are five major Criminological theories, (1) Classical Theory, (2) Positivist Theory, (3) Marxist / Conflict Theory, (4) Sociological Theory, and (5) Multifactor / Integrated Theory.
By constructing theories or representations we can increase our understanding of criminal conduct. Through improving our understanding we can create effective, and operational strategies to handle crime issues. We must have a sufficient amount of accurate and documented research, and or experiments to prove the validity of our research. Research is attaining the information and data needed to generate a theory. We gather research by creating specific controlled experiments to reach a conclusion that will satisfy, or otherwise attest our theories.
Most people get killed over what is known as the “Code of The Street.” In the movie it shows that their code of the street was revenge. They killed Ricky Doughboy and his friends killed them. It also shows that violence and crime happens all over something petty. In one scene in the movie they show Ferris walking into Ricky
As human beings we all see and hear about crimes from a day to day basis. We all question why we have crime and what makes a person commit a crime.
The sociological discipline that deals with crime (behaviour that violates our laws) is known as criminology.
This is usually the start of their careers. Many use their Criminal Justice degree to join law enforcement agencies, such as medical examiners, FBI agents, or police officers. Others go into the educational field and conduct research or teach (Criminal Justice, 2011). A criminologist develops profiles of criminal behavior by using studies and research that examine environmental factors, psychological behavior, educational levels, social issues, and biological factors. Criminologists also develop statistics about crimes by using certain tools obtain from law enforcement agencies (Criminal Justice, 2011). By organizing statistics and developing profiles into meaningful information, a criminologist uses these techniques in trying to develop ways to prevent criminal behavior. State and federal agencies, US customs, private security companies, and drug enforcement agencies all employ criminologists as well (Criminal Justice, 2011).
Criminology is the study of crime and is concerned with developing theories on what causes crime, whereas criminal justice focuses more on the processing of victims and offenders. Crime remains a constant problem in every society, no matter how civilized or uncivilized that country may be. Although, the criminal justice system does receive a lot of attention, the attention is focused more on the males in the system rather than the females. Since 1980 the number of women in state and federal prisons has increased at nearly double the rate for men. There are now nearly seven times as many women in state and federal prisons as in 1980, yet there is still a common misconception that the criminal behavior of females is not a serious problem. In fact when I first enrolled in the class I thought there would be a section about gender politics in the criminal justice system because it is an extremely important component in society, and I was disappointed to discover that there was no such section. I feel that this topic is one of importance because the policies and practices of the criminal justice affect all women, directly or indirectly, and is why I chose this subject over the many others.
Through out the years Criminologists has conducted a great amount of research and through that research Criminologist has developed different theories in order to better understand and explain criminal behavior. Theories try to help make sense out of many observations that are conducted presenting the facts of the principal that connects and explains the theories. If good theory has been developed; then it becomes very valuable to Criminologist, because it shows the knowledge that is beyond the facts that has been presented; which will show Criminologist how to predict how others might behave (Andrews, D and
There are many different aspects of criminal justice policy. One in particular is the different theories of crime and how they affect the criminal justice system. The Classical School of criminology is a theory about evolving from a capital punishment type of view to more humane ways of punishing people. Positivist criminology is maintaining the control of human behavior and criminal behavior. They did this through three different categories of Biological studies, which are five methodologies of crime that were mainly focused on biological theories, Psychological theories, which contains four separate theories, and the Sociological theories, which also includes four different methods of explaining why crime exists. The last theory is
To begin with, one example of the theories of criminology is Subcultural Theory. In the book Criminology Today, James Schmalleger (2015) defines Subcultural Theory as “a sociological
1). Criminology arose from the social scientific community over the year and has since come into its own discipline, it examines the entire process of lawmaking, law breaking, and law enforcing” (as cited in Akers, & Sellers, 2013). Criminology seeks to discover the depth of crime at both the micro and macro levels, from the individual’s natural biological and psychological characteristics, the nurturing of social and structural institutions, to policy, prevention and control.

When thinking about Criminal Justice it’s obvious that research is involved in solving crime. But it goes much further than that. Research is actually conducted in Criminal Justice itself. Research is done in Criminal Justice for a number of reasons. Research can be conducted in Criminal Justice for three main reasons; social problems, policy and academics. Then a number of other additional reasons are exploration, description, explanation, application, predictive and finally intervening. Within why research is conducted is another important aspect of Criminal Justice is Methodology; which is how the research is being conducted. Each of these topics will further be explained in depth.
Criminology is a study of crime, criminals and criminal justice. Ideas about criminal justice and crime arose in the 18th century during the enlightenment, but criminology as we know it today developed in the late 19th century. Criminology has been shaped by many different academic disciplines and has many different approaches. It explores the implications of criminal laws; how they emerge and work, then how they are violated and what happens to those violators. Laws are relative and historically shaped; they vary from time to time and from place to place (Carrabine et al, 2009).
