A crisis can be defined as a turning point, our habitual strengths and coping mechanisms have been surpassed and a new approach has to be developed. According to Barnes (1984:115) “crisis intervention focuses on the reduction of anxiety in the client alongside the mobilisation of hope and the restoration of a sense of autonomy and control over the situation.

Zombies aren’t supposed to exist. But what if they do, and we interact with them every day? Chuck Klosterman’s essay, “My Zombie, Myself”, compares everyday life to the task of killing zombies. Through elaborate metaphors, quotes from zombie experts, and a strong call to action, he successfully appeals to pathos, ethos and logos to convince his readers. Klosterman argues that even though modern life is monotonous, it is possible to escape the monotony.

In any great horror story, the beginning always shows how the world went into utter chaos. In reality, there is no telling what situation prompts the beginning of the chaos that is the zombie apocalypse. However, if a person is able to do what was necessary, knowledgeable survival tactics will be key. Understanding how to use a weapon without thinking, to acquire useful supplies, to maintain a sense of humanity, and to survive in a group will make the difference between death by the walking dead and life in a world of reanimated rotting corpses.

Rodney Clapp, writer, editor for Wipf and Stock Publishers and expert in topics such as theology and culture, in the article, “Attack of the Zombies”, argues that many things in life are beginning to resemble zombies. Clapp assumes that the audience also views zombies as lifeless creatures that go around spreading their disease. The author’s purpose is to persuade the audience to believe that many things they see today are starting to resemble zombies. The author writes in a challenging tone for people who question the similarity of zombies to every day life. Clapp supports his argument by comparing and contrasting, and exemplification.

Advances in communication technology give the crisis teams the ability to reach out to communities and rural areas using reverse phone calls and the emergency broadcast system. Traditional communication methods, such as television and radio, allows the crisis teams to distribute correct information and help reduce the effects of errors that can be communicated through news spread by word of mouth.

A crisis can be a terrible burden on any individual that has or is suffering through one; a crisis can leave a person with a great deal of anxiety and stress. As a crisis intervention worker it is my responsibility to at least try to help those that come into my office. Most that do come to me are going through a crisis of some kind or another and need to work through it. Individuals experience a crisis when a situation or event occurs and their former coping skills and resources become depleted (James & Gilliland, 2017). Crisis models were created to assist counselors build a foundation of interventions strategies and methodologies for individuals who are experiencing a crisis (James & Gilliland, 2017). The three crisis intervention models discussed in this paper are the contextual ecological model, psychological first aid model, and equilibrium model. This paper will explain the importance and value of each crisis model and how they are used in counseling an individual who is experiencing a crisis.

When it comes to a major crisis, especially by world domination from a zombie outbreak, it is essential to know the basics of survival such as materials, protection, and location.

Although not everyone that comes across a stressor in life will experience a crisis, some are unable to cope with the stressor in a healthy manner and eventually succumb to a crisis. If this person does not receive the adequate crisis intervention during this state, he or she is likely to be unable to function at the level he or she had been functioning before the crisis. This will inevitably lead to additional crisis scenarios for every stressor they must face in life. “This pattern can go on for many years until the person’s ego is completely drained of its capacity to deal with reality; often such people commit suicide, kill someone, or have a psychotic breakdown.” (Kanel, K. 2007).

The zombies are used to represent the mass panic of a containable situation, and the government is portrayed as safe keepers of people, but also critiquing the government’s actual response time and effectiveness to situations. Both the story and the movie utilize zombies as a substitution for a more real and occurring matter. The nationwide panic that is represented through a zombie apocalypse can be interpreted as a problem that the country is facing or may have faced before. Despite the slim chance of this occurring, preparation is a key component that will ensure being part of the remnants of human life. However, to combat these zombies, survivors must persevere to save humans from the undead. It is essential not to panic and be as calm as possible during the chaos. To successfully survive, humans must understand the key ideas mentioned in the paper. Shelter is important because it offers a comfort zone against zombies while also being a place to store food.
