CRITICAL ANALYSIS
The report looks at how leadership is viewed in this particular instance of Yacht races. In this case it looks at how Brendan Hall, an individual who was made captain of a sailboat is able to command and lead a group of amateur crew brought together to perform a certain task. Leadership is a key skill needed in order for any teamwork to be successful.
Leadership is defined by Clegg ‘’as the process of directing, controlling, motivating and inspiring staff towards the realization of stated organizational goals” (Clegg et al, 2009). Brendan Hall clearly fits the description given by Clegg throughout the project he conducted all of that ultimately leading to the team’s success. The individuals being led were very depended on Halls skills as a yachtsman so they were more inclined to conform as they depend on the skippers guide for survival. Even with the skills that Hall was offering, he took a more negotiative leadership style rather than transformative is that lives of the individuals concerned were at risk; their lives depended on their understanding of cooperation together in order to survive. The negotiative style was first demonstrated by Bass and colleagues (1995); this type of style relies on mainly power and trust. Giving these factors to each individual influences the process to success as Hall mentioned its about “letting people take their own responsibility.”
"The Boat" by Alistair MacLeod is the story told from the perspective of university teacher looking back on his life. The narrator relates the first memories of his life until his father's death. The story focuses on the conflicting relation between the mother and the father, and their different perspectives on how their children should lead their lives. MacLeod uses features of setting to present the tension between tradition and freedom.
Finally, Leadership is work. A leader works harder than anyone else and they know they need to do so. A captain knows that he has to push himself to work above everyone else. He should run faster, hit harder, and block better than anyone else on the team. If a captain works harder than anyone else, then everything comes together. He earns respect; he takes responsibility, and leads by example.
Oftentimes, when burdening or stressful circumstances begin to generate strain on an individual, they find themselves turning to literary art as a form of mental relief. This deliverance applies, in particular, to the narrator in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and the father in “The Boat,” by Alistair MacLeod. In both short stories, readers can pinpoint several instances in which these specific characters seek solace through differing formats of written language. The function of the father’s books in “The Boat,” and the narrator’s diary in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” is to serve as an instrument of escapism, rebellion, and self-expression, within the controlled existence of
Traditionally, analysis on roles for effective leadership surround corporate or military settings with clearly defined problems, discernable issues, and areas where hypothesis can be made, models formed, predictions tested, and outcomes verified. Analyzing a film like Seabiscuit for the roles of leadership present many interesting questions about leadership and what it means to be a leader. The film Seabiscuit chronicles the lives of individuals as they become intertwined to produce an outcome, training a horse to race. At what point do individuals stop seeing themselves, in their daily lives, as individuals and begin seeing themselves as members of groups having to take on leadership and
In the story “The Open Boat”, there are four men who is a captain, a cook, an oiler and a correspondent. They were in a small boat after their ship sank off the coast of Florida. The crew headed to the lighthouse happily after the cook says there was a house for refuge nearby. But the fact is that no one is there, so they have to row back to sea. Then they saw some people showing up on the beach, so they believed to be rescued this time, but those people thought they were fishing. Then the captain decided that no one was coming to save them, therefore, they had to swim to shore when they still had strength. The oiler swims strongly, but he is the only man who is dead at the end of the story.
The overall leadership behavior of Norman Dale can be described as transformational leadership. Under this leadership, the leader is willing to change how things are running. For example, Dale changed the way practice would take place. He had his routine that he wanted the players to follow. There had to be four passes before shooting the ball.
People all around the world go to extreme measures to survive. Not everyone is capable of having hope and inspiration to survive, nor do they overcome the odds they confront. There are people who faced scenarios such as their plane crashing. If they were lucky enough to make it out alive, they would try to find a way to survive in the location of the crash. There are others who deal with nuclear bombs blasting in their neighborhood and ships sinking, which comes to the conclusion that you’re lost at sea. What would you do if you were in one of those situations? The men in the story “The Open Boat” found a way to overturn death.
My definition of leadership is leading by example. Setting the pace and guiding from the front. Keeping your hand on the pulse of your people with open lines of communication and clear expectations. Ensuring all needs are met from the office paperwork, work space, and the family dynamic. Wherein you create an environment for success as your people are trained, equipped, and motivated to perform at their very best. Leadership influences during my career are good as BMCM Steve Hearn embodied all that is required of a leader. Steve was authentic and personable. He allowed people to get close and yet pushed them to be their best as he would speak to your strengths and weakness. His skills were unmatched yet he gave me a sense of purpose, buy in and belonging. Steve applied patience to help me get the basics of a specialty area that has made me very successful.
During my undergraduate career, I have found myself involved in various leadership roles. My favorite one that I gained valuable experience from was becoming captain of my school’s mock trial team. Being captain this year has meant taking on a much larger responsibility in the club;
Leadership is an action of leading a group of people or an organization. For the purpose of the report, I will be looking at John Wooden on leadership and the Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. I will be reflecting on how the Wooden’s philosophy of what leadership should be relates to today’s business environment. I will be discussing the pyramid of success, looking at various building blocks and see how that holds together and how it can help anyone to achieve whatever they want to achieve in life.
There has been vast amounts of research done on the topic of leadership, and yet despite this it continues to be ‘‘riddled with paradoxes, inconsistencies, and contradictions’’
The Seafarer by Burton Raffel was written during the Anglo-Saxon period where the Anglo-Saxon warriors lived to defend their King, like in the story Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. One of the warriors speaks about his challenges and begins saying that his story is not at all joyful. It is a story full of pain and suffering. The story paints a picture of what it means to be “dislocated”, “set out”, all by oneself and how badly it feels. “My feet were cast in icy bands, bound with frost,with frozen chains, and hardship groaned around my heart. Hunger tore at my sea-weary soul. No man sheltered on the quiet fairness of earth can feel how wretched I was”.(Raffel 1) The powerful imagery in this stanza sets the tone that the narrator is trying to
The sea can symbolize a multitude of emotions; some believe the sea is a simple for loneliness and some believe it is a symbol of peacefulness. Many writers of used variations of these two things to fit the story they are writing.
Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. In the case study Josh Martin uses much different leadership techniques than Tom Saunders which, in summary, can be seen as a quite different style. In the book ‘Management’ leadership is discussed in relation to management. ”Management and
“Leadership is more ability than job. Moreover, it is all about determination, ability to solve problems, set direction for followers, gather them for common purpose and motivating people to achieve tasks. Furthermore, it is a charisma and the ability to reacting at the right time for a particular competitive situation” (L.Mullins, 2010, P372).
