Critical Comparison of Porphyrias Lover and My Last Dutchess
Both of these poems are based around the concept of power and possesion. They tell the story of obssesional lovers. The effect of using dramatic monologue to convey this idea is very effective.
The first poem, Porphyrias Lover, was written in the mid ninteenth century, around 1842. It is the dramatic monologue of the Lover. It is not made known who the recipient of this poem is. I believe it to be an internal monologue, the Lover is going through in his head the events of the previous day and night.
The use of only one person speaking gives off the dominance which is important in the understanding of both poems.
The lover also shows his abnormal character, he

After he has done this he believes she "blushed bright beneath my burning Kiss." This behavior is both neurotic and frightening.
Porphyria is seen as being graceful, she "glides" through the door and also as a very warm person, by the way she brings warmth into the cottage, When she came in she "shut the cold and the storm out". As the reader reads on we see her seductiveness, she "put my arm about her waist and made her shoulder bare" After this has happened the
Lover states his critisisem of her. He says she is "too weak" and proud and vain. This however tells more about the character of the
Lover than that of Porphyria, it shows his very high expectations and his dissatisfaction.
We are led to believe the cottage in which they meet is isolated and that it doesn't belong to either of them. This gives us the sense of secrecy and seclusion which is reflected in their love for each other.
There also seems to be barriers between where Porphyria has come from and the cottage , like the storm. This is also true in their relationship, and I think this comparative difference is a very effective image in putting across the sense of troubles that she encounters because of her inadequacy.
The poem moves on to be very warm and loving in contrast to this previous image of the storm. Yet the idea of a hidden uneasiness is shown subtly show through the
Essentially a monologue set within a frame, this poem creates two personae. The anonymous author gives a brief introduction and conclusion. The Wanderer, an aging warrior, who roams the world seeking shelter and aid. The Wanderer’s monologue divides into two distinct parts, the first being a lament for his exile and the loss of kin, friends, home, and the generosity of his king. In nature, he finds absolutely no comfort, for he has set sail on the winter stricken sea. Poignantly, the speaker dreams that he is among his companions, and embracing his king, only to awaken facing the gray, winter sea, and snowfall mingled with hail.
The speaker is the voice of the poem, since “I” is used alot in this poem, it is in first person. I imagined the speaker’s

Baker is a faculty member in the M.F.A (master of fine arts) program for writers at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. After reading the poem, one might wonder whether or not the poet has experienced such a heart-rending experience himself.
This poem is about great strife in one mans life and shows how one single outlook or journey can change one mans perspective to start to live differently. But who is the man? What is the journey he just took? What theories or morals did he take from this great extensive spiritual journey? Is

cummings. The speaker of this poem carries the heart of his love as well, though his feelings about doing so are very different than that of how Jimmy Cross feels.
Betrayal, a small word, with a big price. A price that one person always has to pay, while the other person stands there as if he was a salesman, hounding that individual until he got what he wanted. The idea of betrayal and it’s consequences are shown in the short story, “The Cask of Amontillado,” by Edgar Allan Poe, and the poem, “Porphyria’s Lover,” by Robert Browning. In, The Cask of Amontillado, Fortunato was the buyer, and Montresor was the salesman. Montresor reeled in Fortunato, using Amontillado, a certain type of wine, as the bait. Montresor brought Fortunato deep inside the lifeless walls of the catacombs, where he was supposed to find the Amontillado. Little did he know that he was staring death right in the face. With
The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This novel features Jay Gatsby, George Wilson, Nick Carraway, Jordan Baker and Tom Buchanan along with many others to show the hopes, the struggles and the romance the characters went through each and every day. Due to the mixing of the two social classes: the rich and the poor, we learn about the causes and effects of what they face. In the book, two major characters that greatly influenced this story were Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson. Both of them had difficulties in the way they acted, felt, and where they belonged to. They also have some relatable characteristics that are alike
This poem really intrigued me with its use of repetition and the message it was trying to convey to its readers. The narrator of this poem seems to depend on another person to give him directions. After reading the poem, I realized that there was a connection between the narrator of this poem and Jenna in the Adoration of Jenna Fox. Both Jenna and the narrator seemed to be lacking an independent train of thought. The “old” Jenna was dependent on her parents to make her decisions while the narrator of this poem seem to follow whatever commands he is told to do so by the other unknown person in the poem. Having your own judgment and opinion will be the differentiating factor between you and the next person.
The speaker of the poem seems to be a protagonist and compares himself to Christ in a playful and comical way. There is repetition of the word,
