Consider your thinking processes when you started the course.
Prior to starting the Critical Thinking course I used difference leadership methods’ taught in the Reserve Officer Training Core (ROTC) and Squadron Officer School; there were additional leadership classes, including battle staff strategies requiring in-depth thinking. After retiring September 2008, with twenty seven years of Air Force and Reserve time, I begin using random means of thinking.
Have they changed at all?
Since the beginning of the Critical Thinking course, I use a process of thinking that is active, purposeful, and organized. The elements of critical thinking I use involve reasoning based on inquiry, evidence, interpretations and implications. Additionally, I
In our lives there are many different cognitive biases that can interfere with our ability to solve problems and/or make rational decisions. One that I think is especially problematic, and has been for quite some time, is representativeness heuristic. This is defined as the tendency to make judgments about a group membership based on physical appearances or the match between a person and one’s stereotype of a group rather than on base rate information. And essentially, a stereotype is the use of concepts to make generalizations about a group of people. (pgs. 252-253) Stereotyping in this country is, and always has been, a huge problem.
Critical thinking is a complex sector of education and how to apply it to teaching students. It is a difficult term to define and teach to a student, it has been a mystery to most teachers to teach students to think critically. Just as Brookfield, explains in chapter one of his book that outlines
“Most: Conger (1991) states in many instances an executive will overtly or covertly influence a team’s proposal, perhaps by picking team members whose opinions are already known, making his or her preferences clear in advance, or signaling opinions during the recommendation phase. If that is the case, the decision maker becomes a de facto member of the recommendation team and can no longer judge the quality of the proposal because his or her own biases have influenced it”
In chapter 2 the book takes about how positive emotions can impact positive critical thinking, furthermore positive emotions can also impact relationships and your ability to make reasonable decisions. The chapter also followed up on how negative emotions can lead to negative critical thinking. I agree with this, I've had past experiences were I took a positive approach to the situation and they way I thought affected the situation enormously. In high school my history teacher also told us about how her father had cancer and had at least two years. When he was told that he didn’t take on a negative and sad approach like many people do when they find out something as crucial as having cancer. Unlike others he took on more of a positive approach
I would like to welcome you to this course. In response to your post, it seems that you have a workload ahead of you, especially working during the night shift. Fortunately, think back from your previous course "reading the key elements of thought in Critical Thinking, Paul and Edler (2012), explain the logic of fear of one of the key elements of reasoning. In other words, "understanding the logic of fear is the key to dealing with fear in a reasonable way, some fears are justified, and some are not" (p. 421). Given this background, I am simply saying to you, if you follow through this course with consistency, and as a critical thinker you will succeed. Thus, by developing a habit of managing your time, hopefully, it will be helpful.
The client is an 18 year-old high school graduate. He self-reported did “OK” in high school, B – C, student, but did well enough on his standardized tests to be admitted to the colleges where he applied. Despite having the opportunity to go to college he reported hating school and did not enroll. He currently works with an independent contractor, performing painting, light carpentry and electrical work. His previous work experiences have included food service at a pool snack bar, and field and maintenance work for a firm owning a large collection of athletic complexes. He has also worked in a warehouse, performing inventory, cleaning and maintenance jobs. He is pleased with the income he is currently making, but realizes
Week 5 what a journey through this critical thinking class. I have learned so much and how to apply the what I have learned to situations in my life whether it is personal or professional. The 5-step process I think for me was the best of all realizing that there is a method in problem solving. It will work even it the solution is not in your favor all the time. Ms. Sessmons I am happy that you made me dig deeper in my thought process to actual think about things before just writing them done. This also made me look at the way that I answer questions, cause me to be slow to speak listen to the entire situation then apply the correct concept before just giving an anwser. I would highly recommend this class to everybody it is
Critical thinking is defined by Victor-Chmil as “the cognitive processes used for analyzing knowledge” (2013, para.1). Critical thinking is knowledge based and
Critical thinking involves rationalizing a given situation and objectively evaluating information (Myers, 2011). This particular method of processing information forces one to assess misleading evidence and strive for accuracy in recorded findings as opposed to trusting his/her, often faulty, intuition. The ability to think critically is very crucial to psychology when evaluating test results because it requires one to ask questions, second guess his/her assumptions, and ignore biases. Critical thinking can be influenced in both biological and psychological ways. The skill of thinking critically can be influenced psychologically because one must yearn to want to evaluate properly and question things rather than
While I ventured through the critical thinking website I saw a lot of interesting topics and discussions towards the cognitive process of thinking. The most interesting topic that caught my eye was the substantive critical thinking discussion. This article talks about what’s effective in raising SAT and ACT scores. It explains how critical thinking raises students test scores greatly. It gives precise statistics of the student’s test scores making this a very accurate article. When you think you exercise your mind and that’s good for your brain. It’s always good to stay educated and think above the level because it will impact your performance greatly. When a student doesn’t go over the level to think above they will be considered average and
According to the information in chapter two of Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Learning and Your Life, I seem to relate most to the role of a stage four “Practicing Thinker.” In this role, I am always trying to improve and enhance my way of thinking. I search for new innovative to expand my range of thinking and work hard to improve where I lack strength in thinking critically. One thing I'm in the process of developing to advance towards the next level of thinking is planning. In making a plan, I would be constructing a schedule that makes time for everything, including critical thinking. I want to make some time to challenge myself and study harder while also making time for myself. Additionally, I took the egocentric quiz
This course has expanded tremendously my critical thinking skills. I am able to research information for a specific topic having in mind the critical thinking elements. Thus allowing me to focus more on precision data rather than unorganized perspectives. In addition when reading articles I am able to determine and analyze the author’s assumptions on their topic. Which helps in pointing out my own assumptions and makes me aware not to utilize them or minimize my usage in my essays. Furthermore, I am able to better criticize the articles I am reading, much like dissecting all aspects of the research to determine the true purpose of the article and it’s benefits. Although, it takes much more time to read a single article with time I think I
1. The first reason every student should be required to take general education courses is according to Washington state university learning goals general education courses promote critical thinking skills. Through assignments given in these classes, students develop the ability to problem solve and choose the right course of action to complete tasks (wsu undergrad education ucore, 2015). I think Ken Walzer from the University of Michigan sums it up best he says general education means to “begin to develop intellectual and moral imagination”(Waltzer, K. 2000). Looking back I can agree with this rationale I remember my first college assignment. I felt overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. After reading the assignment several times, I then broke down the task into parts and then attempted to think through each section. Each course has helped me learn how to think outside the box.
Critical thinking is a skill that can be developed by learning over time. Using critical thinking is about having the ability to comprehend and push for answers. It works best with a positive attitude, and a will to learn (Bethel University, 2013).
First, it is important to understand what is critical thinking. Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and reasonably. It is based on logic and objectivity. It includes the ability to reflect and think independently. A critical thinker
