Tahsin Ahmmed Ortiz PIBENG 6 24th April, 2018 Odyssey Annotations Reflection We had to annotate the Odyssey to understand it on a deeper level. We were supposed to annotate for thematic topics, epic conventions, and figurative language; all while thinking critically. The expectations were to annotate using critical thinking skills. I think that was the hard part for most people because it is a lot easier to just read on a surface level and not try to understand why things were mentioned or happened the
When it comes to critical thinking, reading and writing are two factors that deal with the critical thinking process. A few key aspects of critical reading and writing are identifying the tone in ones writing, how to throughly read and annotate a text, and the revision process. In the essay, “The Maker’s Eye”, Donald Murray explains how the attitude of a writer, listening to what readers have to say and how to edit your own writing makes your work better when critically thinking in college. nglish 203 teaches us how to Paraphrase, Annotate and Summarize texts that we read in class. These are skills I have learnt earlier but never really had a chance to put into practice. When I was given reading responses and an exploratory synthesis to do, they required all of these three skills, meaning I was able to practice them and extend my ability to do them. From writing workshops and a one on one conference with my teacher I was successfully able to understand how to use ideas and quotes from

strategies I think I have developed extremely well is annotating. One of the class goals is to understand critical reading strategies to fully engage with a text, and this is something that this class has prepared me for the most. It was mandatory to take a standardized test for the school to report the percentages of proficiency
high school students struggle with literacy. On the other hand, after learning about social promotions in my other classes, it doesn’t seem that uncommon. I feel that elementary teachers have all of the pressure to make sure students have literacy skills, so it was interesting that this article states that secondary teachers must share that responsibility. It really makes me wonder how these students have come so far without improving in literacy. This article also made it apparent to me that the
My writing and reading skills have developed due to the many factors and phases that has occurred through my upbringing. There are negative effects as well as positive ones. I wasn’t fortunate enough as a child to have many books present for me to read because of my hometown, but because of my wonderful parents that wasn’t the case as I grew up. There are two main subject that I would concentrate on among many others: my parents and my environment, meaning my hometown and school I went to. There
