Critically discuss whether (and how) organisational structure impacts on organisational learning and the learning organisation.

Introduction Within this essay we will look at the structure perspective in relation to organisational learning and the learning organisation. Looking at key theories for both we will consider whether a truly structured company has the ability to learn from the environment and other organisations and has the capacity to become a learning organisation itself. We will specifically look at the classical management theories especially Taylor’s principle of scientific management, as well as taking into account Weber’s ideal bureaucracy. Whilst working in a Mc Donald’s franchise in 2006 it was clear the structure was at the forefront of the business. There was not only a clear hierarchy of control from managers to ‘crew members’ but also set processed from the heads of the whole Mc Donald’s organisation. The customer was also part of the pre scripted set structure from the moment they walked through the door, from how they placed there order and the staff interactions being scripted. Giving staff little opportunity to give feedback from the customer and learn from this for future growth. With such a traditional set hierarchy and structure in many organisations today leads to the question of whether an organisation so structured such as GE or Mc Donald’s, can be open enough to not only adapt to the constantly changing environment around it but also to learn and grow and optimistically become a learning organisation.
