Nowadays, many Chinese business companies emphasize the motivation of employees. In their view, if employees are motivated, they will not only give full play to the initiative and creativity, but also create work with high quality and efficiency. Consequently, more Chinese managers are serious about western theories on motivation in order to obtain the right direction. Maslow’s theory “the hierarchy of needs” is one of those theories. By these methods, which are closely relevant to Maslow’s theory, employees in TESCO generate a sense of belonging and being respected, feeling that their personal purpose is contacted closely to the company. In other words, working hard for the company is exactly working hard for themselves. It is thus clear that employees who are the most important factors to the success of TESCO, are totally motivated.

However, in contrast to Maslow’s theory having positive effects on western companies, it is not precisely applied to contemporary Chinese business. One reason is that Maslow’s theory has many disadvantages. To begin with, Maslow’s theory is short of empirical validation. In addition, even though it is widely accepted, lacking little evidence to support the theory is the fact that cannot be ignored. (Dye et al, 2005). Second, Maslow himself admitted that human needs were not only determined by social construction, but also biology. For this reason, the order of the hierarchy is worthwhile deliberating, it is likely that the needs of belonging, self-esteem as well as self-actualization are on the same hierarchy due to the fact that sometimes only if more than one needs are satisfied will employees be motivated.
