Crossing Brooklyn Ferry, by Walt Whitman, is a poem about a man who takes the Brooklyn ferry home after his work day. At first glance one may say “How can this long poem really be about a ferry?” Once you get reading you realized there is much more to it then riding the Brooklyn Ferry. This poem deals with the idea that all humans are united in the harmonies of life because we all share the same land. This poem describes the relationship between human beings. The poem is describing how he believes that people see the same things he does and feels the same things he does while on the Ferry. Since they do experience the same things, this makes them come together because they must react in the same ways. He is implying that the ferry is connecting humanity because they all witness the same things while riding it. Throughout the poem the speaker shifts who he is addressing. It goes from the crowd, to the second person, to then addressing the commuters on the ferry, and then to everyone who has every rode the ferry, and then to everyone that has …show more content…
Society started to become more homogeneous with the assimilation of immigrants along with the fusion of nationalities, cultures and ethnicities in the United States. The opposite of the melting pot is the idea of the salad bowl where cultures begin to mix but still stay distinct in certain aspects. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry is about New York, which commonly gets referred to as the Melting Pot. New York symbolizes hope and adventure for all different kinds of people from all over the world. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry has been called one of Walt Whitman’s greatest poems. It speaks about how he sees the Melting Pot of America come into play. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry connects to history because the underlying message talks about the immigration into the United States and the changing of culture and nationalities
Thomas Moran is known for his oil paintings of the natural world. He captures nature at the moment in which he sees it; this may, in turn, be serene but also show the dramatic and violent natures of his momentary surroundings. In the compositions chosen he illustrates, as the title infers, a vessel caught in the turbulent, tumultuous sea. As he captured this image, he kept in mind the destructive nature of water also the constructive nature of water. Water has the ability to enable cultures to thrive and to barely survive. Water was the main source transportation of goods, ideas and communication in prehistoric times. In his composition, Moran displays the solid and life-depending aspect of water as
New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world. There are many cultures, races; languages mixed together creating “culturally diverse pot”. “Diversity is the existence of a wide variety of cultures and subcultures represented within a society” (CCN, 2016).
Topic:'Terry says to Charley, "I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody instead of a bum. Which is what I am". Does the film support Terry's judgement of himself?
"A symbolic span over which Westchester and Rockland Counties will move virtually overnight, twenty years into the future" When Governor Thomas F. Dewey made this pronouncement in December of 1955, it does not seem as though even he knew how true his words would be. It took till 1989 and "Field of Dreams" to coin the phrase "If you build it they will come", but someone could have very well made the same observation during the 1950s in reference to Rockland County New York. Both of these statements cannot fully impress into the minds of readers that changes that came with the opening of a single roadway.
The key to the relationship between politics, commerce, and the media is that they are all linked through violence. Violence is how to ensure the audience will pay attention and support films. It also plays a significant role in how some businesses, both legitimate and illegitimate, running smoothly. Just the threat of violence can create compliance, further launching individuals and groups to success. Politics thrive on violence, usually through trying to stop it from creating corruption within society.
In the midst of corruption sits a Great Bridge towering over the landscape as millions of people commute over it, clueless of how deep the crime beneath it runs. In the midst of immigrants sits a bridge that connects one economic powerhouse to another with the ideas and dreams of a German-born immigrant that never got to see his dream completed. In the midst of the mighty East River stands the East River Bridge as a towering monument of mans' ability to make even nature bend toward its iron-like will. In the midst of all this stands the Brooklyn Bridge in all of its glory as the pinnacle of industrial and engineering mastery of that time period and as a testament to the lives of the people that lived through a time of intense corruption, new

Whitman shed light on to the purpose of his piece. By incorporating “him or her” addresses all readers, including all of society. Similar lack of discrimination is expressed in the second stanza. Similar lack of discrimination is expressed in the second stanza, In this moment, the young child, the reader, and society becomes “the barefoot negro boy and girl.” Through the timeless and circular journey, creates a bond between civilization and nature. As time progresses forward, the future will be influenced by past, seemingly insignificant people,
Many people think that there are more illegal immigrants than there are legal immigrants in the United States. Most people do not realize that “75% of immigrants arrived here through legal means” (Malik and Wolgin). Most Americans think immigrants are hurting the economy when they are actually helping the economy. With this Bridge of America program, better relations can be built between new immigrants and American citizens. Bridge of America will help develop teaching facilities for new immigrants and help them understand the culture and language of the United States, as well as how to build a better life in the U.S. The benefits that will come from Bridge of America will benefit both immigrants and current U.S. citizens by creating small
Furthermore, poetry, and the personification of poetry, conversations with old friends and family, should not need a special occasion, rather it should “ride the bus” with patience for the stops before your own and the understanding of other’s needs before your own (line 13). You can also say the bus can represent the speed at which life passes you by and how easy it is to miss something if you are not paying attention, or even, that these missed moments have a poem to help you along your long journey home. With the use of
The Brooklyn Bridge became a symbol of modern world, and is represented in poetry and art. In 14 years, 600 workers, 2 dozen lost lives, and 15 million dollars later it was finished. As well as having the longest span in the world at 1,600 feet from tower to tower, it was the first ever steel suspended bridge. John Augustus Roebling was the pioneer of this piece of art. Roebling is credited with being the first to use steel as a component in his bridge design. Roebling has inspired many pieces of art and structures that we know of today.
This poem is spoken from first person, the narrator even addressing himself as Walt Whitman in order to celebrate himself. While the speaker does name himself, he is still only a fictionalized mediator created by Whitman himself. The speaker does however use actual events from Whitman’s life, but he also uses events from others as if they were his own. In the first three line ones section one, the speaker directly addresses the reader saying “every atom belonging to [him] as good belongs to you”, meaning that parts of the reader are parts of him. (24) This establishes trust and a connection to the reader right off the bat. It also implies that you and him are on a journey of the self and he is the guide. He states that he can be everywhere and is “not contain’d between [his] hat and boots”, therefore can experience what others have gone through. (28) The self is essentially the soul and in
“O Captain! My Captain!” is one of the most popular poems ever written by Walt Whitman. Upon the initial reading of this poem, one may perceive the poem to be about a loyal captain who leads his crew on a treacherous, but successful, voyage which ends in devastation. If interpreted literally this is the poem’s only meaning, but for those who look further there is an underlying story behind the words of Whitman. Whitman uses multiple literary elements throughout this poem in order to unmask the story of Abraham Lincoln’s journey and ultimate death as a result of the Civil War and his fight to end slavery.
The Golden Gate Bridge is “considered to be one of the best and most beautiful examples of bridge design” (Poel and Royakkers 110). Unfortunately, this bridge is also "the US's most popular place to commit suicide" (110). Due to this fact, bridge designers decided that they needed to consider the option of installing some sort of suicide prevention system. Before any decision was made, the ramifications of both implementing a system and not implementing one had to be considered. Deciding whether or not to implement a system calls for an in-depth analysis of the ethics. One must identify the ethical dilemmas present, and provide analysis on the effects on all the stakeholders involved.
The “melting pot” culture refers to people from various cultures coming together to create a new unique culture. (Lorenzo, 2000) In other words, these cultures have ‘melted’ together in a ‘pot’. For example, Chinese, Koreans, Germans and more cultures blended in together to create a whole new American culture. They are not Chinese-Americans, Korean-Americans or German-Americans anymore but just Americans. On the other hand, “salad bowl” culture refers to immigrants who do not lose the aspects of their cultures. . (Lorenzo, 2000) To put it in another way, you can still clearly see the different ‘ingredients’ in a ‘salad bowl’. As a contrast to the melting pot theory’s example, Chinese-Americans, Korean-Americans and German-Americans will still keep the unique traits of their cultures while living together in the country. America has been traditionally referred to as a ‘melting pot’, but recently; there are people who argue that ‘salad bowl’ will be a better description of America’s society today.
