This story Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about an animal revolution over an oppressive farmer. The irony in the story comes when the pigs turn into the very thing revolted against. They exhibit the same cruelty by treating the other animals the same or even worse than previous owners. This cycle of cruelty is shown in the Russian revolution by Joseph Stalin who is represented by Napoleon in the story. Cruelty in animal farm is shown by the human’s treatment of the animals, and the animal’s eventual treatment of each other and the ironic characteristics of the two.

Both the Russian Revolution and animal revolution are the same because they were fighting to gain independence, but it became a cycle turning back into what they fought against. “This novella illustrates how classes that are initially unified in the face of a common enemy, as the animals are against the humans, may become initially divided when that enemy is eliminated.” ("Themes, Motifs & Symbols." Spark Notes.) The quote shows the cycle of power that divides a unity after their challenges have been overcome. This is also shown in the Russian Revolution, as Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky originally come together to overrule a corrupt government but in up becoming what they fought against.
Both Napoleon and Joseph Stalin exploited the power they were given by using it to only benefit them and treating everyone else as lesser people. “In animal Farm, the pigs gradually twist and distort the rhetoric of socialist’s revolution to justify their behavior and to keep the other animals in the dark.” ("Themes, Motifs & Symbols." Spark Notes.) Examples of this include the many changes of the 10 commandments which barred the animals from behaving like humans. But as time went past the pigs took advantage of the other animal’s lack of education, and twisted the Commandments in order to benefit themselves.
