Cultural competency is a goal that all organizations should strive for, particularly organizations that are set up with the purpose of serving the community. The American criminal justice system has long struggled with issues of cultural competency, between questions on what actions to take with mentally ill individuals to severe language barriers that causes gross misunderstandings. Due to recent events and media attention possibly the most salient group that faces cultural competency issues with the criminal justice system is the African American community. Due to practices such as racial profiling the American public has an ingrained prejudice against African American males. While in some cases the use of race to complete a profile of a criminal offender is necessary and understandable, but when our system uses it as one of the sole forms of suspicion in some cases this paints a very morose picture of our system and causes an immense amount of tension. However, now that society has accepted young, African American males as the standard criminal, law enforcement officers no longer even have to be told to racially profile because American society has already spelled it out for them throughout their lives who they should look out for. If we want to put an end to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling, we first have to stop the perception among Americans that young, African American males are criminals. Understanding that the prejudice towards African Americans is so ingrained into our society and that negative attitudes expressed by African Americans and the distrust they feel towards the criminal justice system spirals into a seemingly endless cycle of discrimination and fear is important to note if we ever want to put an end to the discriminatory practice of racial profiling. The act of racial profiling is an expression of internal prejudice that people often don't realize that they hold, so the first step to ending the practice is for law enforcement officers and the public in general to learn to check their perceptions.
