Before Europeans arrived in America, Indian cultures were undisturbed. Lifestyles were developed based on the Native Americans surroundings and available resources. Indians adapted to their environment in order to live and thrive, making the cultures diverse. Cultures had different economies, beliefs and traditions, and lifestyles. American Indian cultures had different economies. Some cultures used agriculture, while others hunt. Two other options would be hunting-gathering and fishing. This was based upon what was available. For instance, places with hot climates like the Southwest might use techniques like agriculture and hunting- gathering. This is shown on my map titled “North American Indian Peoples”. Another difference
Have you ever wonder how the world was created from another culture’s perspective? Native Americans used creation myths to explained to their people how the world was developed overtime. Creation myths are a big part of the Native American culture. they have been passed down from generation to generation. In the creation myths, harmony with nature, rituals, and strong social values are shown in each myths. The purpose of having strong social value in these myths is to teach younger Native Americans valuable lesson if they ever do something bad. These myths reveals how the rituals were created and their intentions for doing it. Creation myths has harmony with nature in it to show a very close kinship between them
Indians lived all over America, in many different environments including the flatlands, the forests, the mountains, the deserts, the prairies, on the coast, and even in the arctic. All these Environments affected the different Indians in different ways, so that different Indians evolved over time.
Working with diverse populations it is also important to remember that within a specific race there are different cultures and subcultures. Culture within a race includes knowledge, beliefs, morals and customs as a part of that society. It is important to remember that just because two people have the same skin color and share genetically the same race, culturally they can be very different. In North America Native Americans are unfortunately grouped together based on similar characteristics. Although many Native American tribes due share a great deal not only genetically but culturally, tribes have developed their own set of social norms and culture based on region and possible different spiritual beliefs. To further differentiate within the
This paper will argue that the Native cultures had significant differences between them, as well as differences with the European colonists. Europeans also greatly differed in their encounters with, and treatment of these Native Americans.
Northwestern Indians, such as the Iroquois, changed to their environment by burning forests to hunt and grow crops. However they also adapted to their environments by creating villages around the growth of maize much like their counterparts on the west coast.
Between Native American Culture and the society we live in today, there are ample amounts of similarities between the two cultures. Some of the things we share in common are ceremonies, respect for animals and nature, good and bad competition and good and evil create a common world. “Coyote and the Buffalo”, “World on the Turtle’s Back”, and “Brother Bear” show us the many similarities we have with the Native Americans. For example we have just about the same respect for animals and nature as the Native Americans did. We also have ceremonies like church, wedding, funerals and much more. We are also in constant competition. It may may not be the same competition as the Native Americans but we are constantly fighting for our grades, our sports and sometimes our friend. It is not always good
It is no secret that Europeans and Native Americans have an intricate history of conflict and cooperation. Going all the way back to the 16th century, where it all started, their encounters were mostly unpleasant. Indians were the first ones to settle in the Americas, so they had to be creative when it came to living with all this new land. Each tribe had their own culture, beliefs, religions, ideas, and ways of living which for the most part, were not in agreement with European lifestyle. In my opinion, all of those differences are what lead the Europeans and Native Americans relationship to frequent destruction.
The American Indian is a very unique and integral part of Amreican history, with a very rich and beautiful cultural background. There are over 558 federally recognized tribes in America right now,and another 126 who have applied for federal recognition. At the time of first contact with Europeans, the United states was fully occupied by Indian Nations and some 300 Indian languages existed, approximately 106 of which are still spoken. The diversity and hetrogeneity of the American Indian community cannot be overstated.
Native American societies were changed when the Europeans introduced diseases and it decreased much of the native population. The goals of the Spanish were to promote God, seek glory, and gold. The Spanish set up colonies and tried to convert natives to Catholicism, most of the time through violent actions. Some native american societies resisted change by refusing to convert
After reaching the coast, many captives were confined to slave forts, slave castles, or outdoor holding pens. The slaves could then spend anywhere from days up to a year in these factories awaiting a horrible, yet unknown journey ahead of them. The living conditions for the male and female captives in these forts, castles, or holding pens were horrible. They were treated like a piece of trash. Some of the captives were assimilated into the waterside markets, and some were separated from their life. The captives were turning into the “independence beings into human commodities.” Independence beings into human commodities mean that the traders for captives were turning the captives into a property. When the traders turned the captives into a
Prior to European colonization, North America was home to many Native American Tribes. These tribes spoke many different languages, had diverse social customs, and had different resources available to them depending upon location. Two prominent native groups were the Pueblo People of the Southwest, and the Tribes of the Mississippi River Valley. While these groups had some prominent similarities, there were, in fact, many differences between them.
When the Europeans made their first conquests of the Americas, they were greeted with a whole new environment of flora, fauna, people, and cultures. Likewise, the Native Americans were introduced to a people that in many ways were vastly different from themselves who brought with them new ideas, diseases, and technologies. Their interactions within the Americas would change both their own lives and cultures as well as the very environments they lived in. Indeed, European contact with Native Americans introduced the Europeans to a new world while creating a new world for the Native Americans. Their interactions would develop through the social and environmental developments of the Columbian Exchange, slavery, and Christianity.
This week’s readings, virtual visits, and film, were all excellent insights to the lives of people living in America but in different situations. The two stories that stand out to me most are Franny Kelly and Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. Kelly wrote about her capture by Native Americans while Hopkins wrote about her travels westward. Kelly, a white girl, expressed her fear of the Native Americans and related them as being savage and barbaric. To describe the Native American lifestyle, Kelly used the term “…to live in barbarous ignorance, and rove the woods among savages...” (1134). She also blatantly states that whites were the “superior race.” During her time with the Native Americans, Franny Kelly seems to be treated rather nicely. She is offered
Patricia, great post. I do think that a culture that needs some attention is the Native American culture. There are many reasons why this culture needs attention from the medical community. Some of the issues that could be covered when seeing the Native American culture are mental health, heart disease, stroke, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and cancer.
Many years before we where born, different civilizations habited America, the most viable civilization was Inca. They had a well-developed social system and factories, cities where connected by good roads and a postal system. They engaged in agriculture, using the water that was provided down from the Andes and Incas did not fight against their neighbors, maintaining peace. Concluding my idea, clearly the Incas where the strongest culture and these are the reasons I choose them.
