Cultural Differences In America

An example of how cultural differences can be prominent in one’s community is in the way birthdays are celebrated. The American custom is to celebrate the first birthday, but Mexicans celebrate the third birthday. Since there is so much poverty in Mexico, the family believes that once a child reaches the age of three, they will be able to survive from then on. An example of a worldwide cultural difference, is the definition of beauty. In some countries the “beautiful” woman is fuller-figured, while in the United States the epitome of beauty is being thin.

Over the past 100 years, the United States has changed the way it views other cultures including more respect, equality, and freedom for all people. As much as America has grown, has America really changed that drastically? Across the nation and world, cultural differences still exist, misunderstandings continue, and fighting persists. Recent attacks within the United States that are similar to the conflicts between the Japanese and Americans in the early 1900’s include the 9/11 attack, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, and the mass shooting in Orlando.

With how to world is today our culture is like a big melting pot and as you grow and get married the pot continues to grow as you add more and more different ingredients into it. Based on my experience in Eastern Europe and in North America, I fully embrace both Serbian and the different cultures that are in Canada. In the summer, I try to go to as many Serbian events as possible and at these events, there is traditional music, food and dancing which I enjoy so much. Unfortunately, I have not gone to many events of different cultures but I do like to educate myself about different customs and traditions in order to build on my awareness and knowledge of different types of cultures. Culture has a paramount influence in everyday day life from the way people dress to way people gather food to how someone greets others. It united group of people based on their share ideas, perceptions, and knowledge (Blanco). Although some cultures share similar aspect, some can vary differently in their customs and norms. An example would a clan known as Nacirema whose culture would be described by outsiders as extreme and sadistic. Their culture consists of unique ritual, strong believe in magical essences, but how different does it vary from the American Culture?

Often, I consider whether there are other living creatures around that we have not yet found. A while prior I had a thought to investigate the universe all the more intently. In light of my interest, I recently went by an irregular planet called Earth. As I landed on Earth, everything was extraordinary; it was as though I was trapped in a snow globe all my life and did not know anything past. Consequently, I felt ecstasy as I walked through a narrow pavement exploring the nature around me. Our own particular planet varies in a wide range of viewpoints. In addition, there are frequent significant differences in other living creatures. I observed a common species and examined them well; they refer to themselves as humans, more specifically Americans.

I spent six years of my life in the United States where I met people with diversified cultural backgrounds. Of all the cultural differences I experienced, I felt that elderly in America and Japan are different, as in how they act in the society. For instance, elderly in America seemed to have more jubilant life compared to those in Japan.

Throughout the different cultures around the world, there are many traditions that have been in place for many years. These traditions have been passed down from generation to generation and are looked at as being normal in these cultures. To the United States, and other parts of the world, some of these traditions are looked at as being crazy, bizarre, and even strange. There are many different cultures and unique traditions associated with them, but these are 5 interesting traditions found around the world.

Through the course, I learned about several pairs of different communities: Germans and Austrians, Austrian and Hungarians, Hungarians and Yugoslavians, and Croatians and Serbians. These communities separated themselves from each other through various aspects, including language, religion, cultural practices, history, ethnicity. In all the communities I was most interested in the community division between constituent republics in Former Yugoslavia, especially the division between Serbs and Croats. Serbian and Croatian communities share many elements. They both live in the Balkan Peninsula. They are both Slavs. Also, the language difference is very small. In the United States, a baby is born every 12 seconds and an immigrant moves to the States every 33 seconds, yet we sometimes get caught up in our own community and do not realize how many differences we have with, not only people in the United States, but also the people living right in our communities. After sitting down and getting to interview a fellow classmate about their cultural experiences, it was very surprising to me how different someone’s upbringing can be from my own. Julia gave me an amazing interview, she and I have very similar upbringings, but we are very different in some of our cultural beliefs. Julia Kemp differs from my cultural beliefs in our look on politics, our family traditions, our involvement based on gender, and our religious beliefs. One of the differences I discovered early on was our political belief.

Since American society is based on lower, middle, and high classes, wealth is one of the major concerns. The United States is divided into a wide range of cultures. The majority of the cultures is made up of Caucasians and African Americans. “Whites alone made up 77.7 percent while blacks made up 13.2 percent of the population in 2013” (United States Census Bureau). Both of these races combined make up 90.9 percent of the United States population, and because of this, these two races will make up most of the workforce.
