Junot Diaz’s “How to Date a Brown girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie)” is more than a mere story about handjobs. It is a satirical piece about a young dominican boy named Yunior explaining how to pick up girls. The He gives advice on how to change your style depending on the girls ethnicity and social class. It is told from a second person perspective as if the he was addressing the reader directly. Diaz uses setting, satire , and theme to highlight the cultural differences in the United States through the use of a boy trying to go on dates. The story takes place in a low income area of New Jersey. The setting in this story is a blunt way the cultural divide is represented. The setting is actually the first ways the cultural difference are recognized. The first piece of advice is to set up your house for a girl based on where she is from. In this scene the narrator's number one priority is to hide his government cheese “If the girl’s from the terrace stack the boxes behind the milk. If she’s from the park or society hill hide the cheese in the cabinet above the oven” (Diaz 100). He has to hide his surroundings in order to impress upper class girls because they would dismiss him as a partner if they knew his economic status. The restaurants Yunior brings these girls to is another important setting in the story.
