Throughout the United States, cultural diversity is increasing each day. Cultural diversity consists of the traditions, beliefs, values, languages, customs, and other various factors that identifies with individuals, as well as the groups they belong to. When it comes to conceptualizing cultural diversity, there are three different models that were used historically when it comes to “dealing with” cultural diversity. These three models include assimilation, pluralism, and multiculturalism. Assimilation involves the merging of groups and their traditions in order for them to adopt and endorse traits of the dominant culture (Kottak & Kozaitis, 2012). An example of a time where the assimilation model was used during the English colonization.
Assimilation is to remove a community from their inherit language, cultural practices and displacing them from their lands to conform with non-Aboriginal societal models. Assimilation is achieved by removing First Nations from their traditional lifestyle, rejecting their governance and suppressing their basic human rights through the evolvement of colonization.
America is greatly influenced and enhanced by the many versatile cultures which inhabit it. Cultural diversity has added to our economy in such a way that it brings innovated ideas and contact structures throughout the world. International cuisines have come to America through subcultures, have expanded the food industry, and have allowed English Americans to try new foods and flavors. Immigrants have brought with them religious values that greatly differ and vary from those at which were natural in the main stream American culture. The educational development through foreign nationals has led America, as a nation, to excel and be deemed one of the most intelligent nations in the world! Consequently, the subcultures have kept our
The United States (U.S.) is the third largest country in the world with a population of more than 320 million. It consists of 50 states, and is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. The United States is known as a nation of immigrants, as people from all over the world have migrated to the country over the years, in particular people from the northern part of Europe, a majority of them being the English who have populated the country from as early as the 1600s. These people were the ones who, together with the Native and Latin Americans, Africans and Asians, shaped the values and traditions that became the ruling culture of the United States.
Cultural diversity is the understanding that within a given society, there are many cultures and backgrounds being represented in that society. Diversity can be represented by the different languages being spoken natively or by racial and ethnic orientation. The diversity of cultures is what allows for an exchange of ideas, goods and values from one culture to another. Such diversities within cultures can only exist if they are maintained and are seen as equally as important as any other. Cultural diversity is also ever changing the landscape of the United States as we are welcoming more immigrants.
As I was started reading this chapter I was very much unaware that, the inhabitants of the Artic often are called Eskimo. Arctic people are sectioned into 4 categories: the Unangan, The Yup’ik, the Inupiaq, and the Inuit. The Unangan populate the Aleutian island, the Yup’ik dwell in southern and central Alaska, the Inupiaq in northern Alaska, and the Inuit live in the rest of the North American Arctic. Everybody has their own particular tribe ceremonies and social generally the same numbers of us in the United States are assorted, the straightforward purpose behind being various is the thing that causes the adjustment in the practices. Despite the fact that they are from the same tribe they have diverse viewpoints to a large portion of the stuff. From the language to how they hunt and what they hunt to their living style.
So today I am supposed to stand here in front of you guys and talk to you about cultural diversity. What exactly is cultural diversity you ask? It’s the diverse varieties of different ethnic groups within a society. So with that being said I would like to take this time and share with you some of the background of my cultural background, which is Italian. I wanted to cover the important topics such as, their movement to the U.S, The Mafia, and most importantly.. their food!
Assimilation: is the process where people are abandoning their original roots and culture to become a new person in the other cultures with accepting all their customs. For example, if I went to China and started to wear them, talk their language, and eat their food. No one can notice that I am Emirati, yet many people will think immediately that I am from China. Therefore, in the shortcut, I am sacrificing myself in order to have new culture and
“Diversity is about all of us, and about us having to figure out how to walk through this world together.” (BrainyQuotes) America is called the melting pot for our variety of people that have melted together to become the great nation that the world knows. America’s society has been influenced by ethnic diversity from the foods that people eat, the clothes one wears, and the languages heard everyday.
So many government leaders aim to lower taxes on companies, with the knowledge that would help to understand the idea of less taxation could make more business.
Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued. The foundation of this belief is that every culture and race has made a substantial contribution to American history. However, many people remain opposed to the idea of multiculturalism, or cultural diversity awareness, while others often support it and yet have no clear idea of how it should be taught. The diversity of the United States is truly astounding, as many different ethnic and racial groups have contributed to the social,
It is in our nations’ interest to invest in America’s future employees. By 2050, the U.S. populace is predicted to escalate by 50 percent, and minority groups will make up nearly half the population. Immigration will account for almost two-thirds of the nation’s population development. The population of mature Americans is anticipated to increase more than twofold. One-quarter of all Americans will be of Hispanic origin. Nearly one in ten Americans will be of Asian or Pacific Islander descent. And more female and people with infirmities will be on the job (Office of the Secretary, n.d., Gray, n.d.). There are innumerable ways in which individuals have been defined. Classifications of the term diversity range from narrow to
Multiculturalism is the perpetuation of cultural identities within a society, while assimilation is the changing of different cultural identities to conform to predominate society’s cultural norm. Multiculturalism includes a rich variety of languages, assorted culturally reinforced attire, and the diversity of religious worship. With assimilation however, the cultures absorb each other’s cultural aspects, therefore becoming one people, but generally the dominate society characterizes prevail as prominent.
America is one the most culturally diverse places I can think of. And even though we have progressed tremendously, recent years have showed us we stil have a very long way to go. Between the protests and the violence or the fake news and alternative facts many of us find ourselves asking the same question. Why are we still dealing with this is 2017?
America has a diverse culture created from the unique blending of many people groups, each with their own set of personal and religious beliefs and traditions. Culture is an ever changing thing – with the shifting ideals, morals, and social behaviors that make up the particular group of people. Culture is defined as “The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization .” (Merriam-Webster online dictionary, 2016) America’s culture has changed drastically from the time of our founding fathers. In researching America’s history, as well as my own personal experience, I have observed this shift in thinking and behavior. From the ideas of moral absolutes as worded in such
In this country, we have been blessed throughout the years with an immense wave of cultural diversity. Very few countries in the world have such a wide variety of different people from all different places and walks of life like our country does. Whether this is something we welcome or not, it has had the power to influence our culture in several different aspects. Much like we have various languages spoken in our country, as well as various types of food that we enjoy, we also have various religions being practiced as well. People bring their religious beliefs and practices with them when they come here, and they remain faithful to those beliefs despite moving to a country that may or may not practice that culture. They seek other
