Cultural Evolution. Before I could have a personal experience in this amazing project, in class, I was informed of the purpose of this activity in a general way. The main goal of the ACE is to produce and preserve urban gardens, and at the same time encourage values of sustainable living. Consequently, Art of Cultural Evolution wants to create the first sustainable center here in Homestead, Florida, where I had the pleasure of participating and made my little contribution to this great movement. My personal experience in the ACE, the day that I had to go, was very gratifying. Although I considered myself as a city person, I must admit that the contact with nature was something very pleasant. What most impacted me from this project, was that all the food they harvested there, are garnered without …show more content…
It feels like you are creating life, and somehow contributing to a more balanced life. One thing that I would suggest for this project, is more promotion. I did not know about the existence of this noble movement. Consequently, for the creation of said promotion, this engagement activity should be required, in all the courses, or at least talk about it and the general purpose of this one. For example, in this class, before being required to pick communities partner, professor Alex Salinas talked about it, and gave us a lot of information about the Civic Engagement Project. One of the pages that he recommended was reading the dialogue about a similar project to ACE. The name is Colony1 and has as a main goal “to bring environmental consciousness to the public through art and science”. With this, the public can respond or be aware of the current crisis of the environment. Art of Cultural Evolution, was one of the best things from this semester. I hope this project can develop more, and that every college student can get to learn about it, and the importance that this mission represents for our

There’s various things that describes everyone, but there’s only a few things that make each and every one of us unique, which is, our cultural background. As far as cultural background, it defines the individual’s upbringing. The cultural background includes ones religion, race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, linguistic and values. These values can be shaped by family, friends, society, or authoritative level. This paper is a great way for one to define my identity or at least understand who I am.
There are many cultural differences between the United States and France. Some of these are simply social and others are cultural. Hofstede’s Value Dimensions can be used to highlight the differences between the cultures. Individualism vs collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, power distance, and long-term vs short-term orientation are all characteristics that differ between France and the United States.
The chapter discusses how human development is affected by the nature in which a person is born into. Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection, a scientific theory that supported the belief of evolution, was manipulated and applied to different areas of life, and thus it became the shaping force in European thought in the last half of the nineteenth century. Darwin, through observation of organisms, determined that a system of natural selection controlled the evolution of species. He found that the organisms that were most fit and assimilated to the environment would survive. They would also reproduce so that over time they would eventually dominate in numbers over the organisms with weaker characteristics. This new theory was radical and interesting to the scientific world but its effects reach far beyond this small institution of
Multicultural psychology is "the systematic study of all aspects of human behavior as it occurs in settings where people of different cultural backgrounds encounter each other. Multiculturalism has been considered a "fourth force" in the field of psychology, supplementing behaviorism, psychodynamic theories, and humanistic psychology. It explores such topics as differences in worldviews and in means of communication; the acculturation process; stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination and racism; cultural identity development; and building multicultural competence" (Fhagen-Smith, 2010). Multicultural psychology attempts "to understand and to accurately represent the psychology
An amazing college level course that could be offered to first-year students in the Global Scholars program would be a cultural exploration course. Not only would it be a physical exploration course, but also a mental exploration course. Students would begin the course by sharing where they want to travel and their reasons for doing so. The most popular places would be chosen by the amount of interest. Afterwards, some classes would be spent exploring the history and culture of those specific places. Students could perform skits, make costumes of traditional clothing of the area, construct unique pieces, or do other creative things to show their understanding of the areas and their personal thoughts on them. After presenting their creations,
Tree groves have been planted, rain gardens have been created, and gardens are tended on a regular basis. These are just a few of the many conservation innovations conducted at Chesapeake Ecology Center. The massive amount of participation is done completely on a volunteer basis. Multiple groups of people give their time then disperse their knowledge into their own communities in order to increase neighborhood expertise that can help protect environments across the state. CEC has been recognized as a top notch garden facility oven the last ten years (CEC. 2017).
One of the many reasons why I would like to engage in a project such as this is that it’s a great learning experience. This component of the Honors Program allows you to get out there in the world and discover something new. To take an idea that you might already have and further it. For instance, if you have a problem with something that’s going on in the world today then you can choose to do the research path of this component. In choosing this path you’re able to explore the problem at hand and shed more light on it. Moreover, in the process you might even draw more attention to it so that others are more aware.
In Cenla's community there are limited resources that encourage recycling. At Louisiana State University at Alexandria there is often an overflow of recyclable goods that can be salvaged and re-purposed to benefit our community. We propose an affordable campus project, Recycle Rally, that networks students, teachers, and those in the community through volunteer recycle days and projects that use recycled materials as an art medium. Professors are encouraged to give assignments and extra credit to motivate students to volunteer for work days, as well as, participate themselves. After completing refurbished art projects, students will need support from the community to purchase recycled art, in order to offset the cost for bins, labor, and transportation. The benefits of implementing the program inspire students to care, network, and build within their community,
Through working with clubs within my school and community I have volunteered at a number of river and road cleanups. The pollution in my town is overwhelming when you are the one cleaning up the environment and it makes one stop and think about why their community would not take better care of the earth. As an ambassador for the National Society of High School Scholars I would be able to inspire my generation to take better care of the earth by recycling and not littering. By educating my generation I believe we could start a serious movement which would tackle the problem of pollution not only in my community but in all communities in America and
From the common ancestor to organisms as complex as the Bonobo, certain species have changed to the point where they cannot be seen as related to their ancestors at all. The Bonobo (Pan paniscus), the Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), the domestic Dog (Canis lupus familiaris), the Rhinoceros (Rhinocerotidae), Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), Lion(Panthera leo), and American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) are all prime examples of organisms that are all related to one common ancestor.
For my second culture immersion project I went to eat at a Mexican restaurant. I went with my group members Ryan, Brian and Brian's girlfriend. I went this pass Tuesday after we had our group meeting. I don’t recall the name of the restaurant but I know it was downtown Appleton near by the Walgreens. . This was good choice for the project because I never have eaten at an actually Mexican restaurant before.
