Cultural Melting Pot Analysis

The United States is considered a “Cultural Melting Pot”, meaning humans of many different cultures, races, and ethnical background, living in the one cohesive environment. At this point our culture will only continue to blend. With our ever changing idea of “normal” we need to stay culturally informed. We as U.S. citizens need to be culturally literate; we need to have the understanding at an early age of others ideas/behaviors to advance our nation’s social, economic and political welfare. Eric Liu has worked under a few presidents and worked with many state organizations, he is a great writer with ideas that are listened to. Liu had stated “Yes, America is foundationally English in its language, traditions of law, social organization, market mindedness, and frames of intellectual reference. But then it is foundationally African as well—in the way African slaves changed American speech and song and civic ideals; in the way slavery itself formed and deformed every aspect of life here, from the wording of the Constitution to the forms of faith to the anxious hypocrisy of the codes of the enslavers and their descendants” (2015). Much of our music today is influenced by African Americans; gospel was sung in plantation fields to invigorate the masses that later modified into music genres such as rock ‘n’ roll, country and western all known as presumingly “white”.
