Norms A norm is something that is standard in society. Within sociology, it is specifically the cultural expectations and rules that a person within the culture is supposed to uphold. Norms tell an individual how they should behave within a certain situation. According to Saul McLeod of Simply Psychology (2008), people are expected to behave in a way that is not random. Norms are social standards that are agreed upon by a society so that members of a culture do not deviate into areas that others would consider abnormal and wrong. Also norms vary by culture, so one culture that has an agreed upon and socially practiced norm may vary from another culture that does not do the same thing and instead has different norms. Each culture’s norms differ based on beliefs and customs.

The social norm that I wanted to perform an experiment on, was a social norm of only wearing CSS or affiliated programs apparel at practice. This norm is easy to follow, but I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if I wore an opposing team’s apparel. As a transfer soccer player from St. Catherine University, I decided that would be a perfect opposing team to represent. So, at practice, I decided to have all of my CSS practice stuff on and have a St. Kate’s sweatshirt on instead of our typical warmup. The school colors are completely different, so I really stood out with my dark purple and yellow sweatshirt.

Everyday, American individuals conform to social norms by observing or interacting with one another. These unspoken rules guide how individuals are expected to behave in society. A culture is a set of values, beliefs, and behavior that outlines a person’s way of life, and by conforming to societal norms, humans are creating their own culture. However, when norms are violated, one may respond with any sort of emotions including anger, confusion, or being afraid. Without norms, the world would be chaotic. People would break laws making this world unsafe. For this assignment, I was told to observe people's reaction by breaking a folkway, a type of social norm that results in small consequences.

The training exercises were fabulous activities that provided experiences in assessing cultural norms, identifying the role culture plays on our perceptions, and techniques for observing behavior. Each event provided the participants with a critical component required in field observations. The cultural norms activity helped to acquaint participants with interacting with strangers, recognizing that culture provides comfort and security. The cultural description activity was perfect for building and understanding the role culture plays when trying to understand human behavior. In field observations, "weird" can simply be behavior outside my cultural understanding.

Social and Cultural Norms shape the decisions individuals make throughout their lives. Social Norms are a set of guidelines that people follow when they take action and they are usually enforced by punishments and rewards, it is used on a daily basis (Wade, Tavris, 332). There are also social roles that people fall under and that typically is determined by one’s culture. Culture is a program that follows certain rules which govern the way the members behave. Each family has its own set of rules, which they follow on everyday routine or on some special occasions. It is funny that our parents and elder makes rules to be followed in the family but many times they don’t follow them. Being youngest of the family everyone expect you to follow all the rules they have made. They themselves don’t follow it, and if you question them why don’t you follow it. They answer you are the youngest don’t question your elders. I want to share an example, In our family we had a rule that all eating and drinking should be in kitchen area nothing should be taken to the rooms. I followed it all the time but, many times my father or my uncle will take their food in their room to eat. I ask them all the time that we are not allowed to eat and

they act in the manner they act due to certain social norms that have been instilled in their minds. Also it is important to note that a state may change the way in which it chooses to interact with other states. This is an idea that both realists and liberalist do not mention.

Social norms are very common among human beings. The meaning of social norms is the rule that tell us how we should behave in specific situations. Social norms help us better understand how and why human behave the way they do. Conformity is one form of social norm. In conformity, human tend to adjust the way they behave or think in fit into a group. Conformity, is probably one of the biggest form of social norm. No one wants to feel left out, so they conform to certain standards to fit in. With obedience, we have been raised to think and respect those who have higher authority. This why, those who are perceived to have higher authority will comply to what they are told to do.

The term "normal" is flawed in most of the situations it is used in. To say something is normal is to diminish what others may deem normal in their own minds. For some, it may be normal to go to bed at 8 at night, while for others it may be normal to go to bed at midnight. In these instances, the term norms should be referred to instead. It can be the norm of the U.S. to sleep later in the evening but the norm for somewhere else to go to sleep earlier. In the case of sexual behaviour, there is no "normal." That is implying that those who do not follow a specific behaviour are abnormal.

Modern popular media has a significant impact on defining cultural norms in our society. The rise of smart phones and other personal devices means that we are inundated with images on an ongoing basis. So many of these images represent women in an ideal form that is unattainable

Societal norms claim that the perfect “couple” is a man and a woman. For reproductive purposes, that is true, but it is also incorrect. There’s more to orientation than straight, gay, lesbian or bi. Some of the most common uncommon orientations are Demisexuals, Pansexuals and Asexuals. Being demisexual is not having any sexual attraction towards an individual unless that person has formed a strong emotional connection with that person. A person who is pansexual is one who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and spiritual attractions for members of all gender identities/expressions.
