Nowadays, young people tend to take the norms seriously. They care greatly about how someone is dressed. I personally think the norms have affected people on how they think. What I mean is that, they started to judge people by the norms. If someone is not dressed in certain ways or are behaving in different ways than they think, then that person will be judged. "Many norms are assumed, not written down" (pg. 38). I totally agree with this. No one need to feel pressure to follow the norms. "Even within a culture not everyone shares equally in that cultural knowledge, nor does everyone agree completely on it." (pg. 37) When I studied in China, I learned that Chinese people love the colors, red and gold. In China, colors carry significant
On a daily bases people make excuses for everything. Everything meaning our actions and the things that we say. Common things that we make excuse for deal with sexist, racist, and heterosexist comments. Sexist is classified as saying that one sex is better than the other. An example of this is someone calling a male or female something that they are not. I do not like this because we are all humans and deserve to be respected and not called something that is degrading. We all know that racist is downgrading one race compared to another. An example of this is, saying that all black people are loud and ghetto. We all act the same but some people do certain things different from others. That’s just there way of living. I do not think that just because one person acts one way the whole race does also. Heterosexist is defined as heterosexuality is better than all other expressions. An example of this would be talking about how a guy dresses and calling him gay. I do not agree with this as well because it is good to stand out and be your own person not matter how others see you.
The group communication norms were enforced by each other within the groups I surveyed. No one particular individual had the power or status to enforce the communication norms and if they did it did not show per the survey results. Many of the groups I learned about through my surveys had one thing in common and that was, the groups did not have a leader in the sense many wanted all members to participate and felt if the group had a leader then others might not continue their participation as they were very worried about the group and fairness to all members. That has not been my experience though in groups I have a participated in. For example, I had the opportunity in being a part of a panel for children toys. Within this group there was
“What is that on your neck?” The realization was perceived to be a bruise. Did she run into something? Maybe, she was accidently hit. The blurting of my thoughts caused her to laugh. “A hickey!” A hickey, was the answer to the my confused question. I thought to myself, a hickey could be another name for a bruise, in public school lingo. I was mistaken. A mixture of confusion, disgust and outright disbelief consumed this girl. A simple girl sheltered by years and years of Catholic education spread her wings and dove straight into the public abyss. Public culture was a home run on the ball field which I could not find myself being able to catch, before it went over the fence. The unnecessary cursing heard in the infamous rap songs played on the radio blew my overused “crap” out of the water. Existence of lesbians and gays were a straight cannonball in the Catholic structure that was built for 9 years. My mother spent a whole month explaining to me what each meant, which is not as astounding as I thought. In this public culture, the average person does not wear a uniform, or anything close to it. The appeal of having barely any clothes on your body confused me, but thank God for a dress code. Slow deterioration became a part of my daily activity. Constant confusion and disbelief had overcome me, until one
We realize this, and think about the assumptions we’ve made, sometimes it's too late, and sometimes...not so much.
Ethnicity! Even though I am African American, white, Native American, and Indian, I still just consider myself as black. As of my grandma raising my mom to be a catholic, I technacally had no choice but to follow in their footsteps and become catholic as well, which is where my mom and I share most things incommon. I believe that even without me knowing it, that I am most likely choosing my friends that share the same beliefs and equailties as me. Just like in Leonid Afremov painting The Bridges of Amsterdam Canvas Print I am just as beautiful, colorful, open- minded, bright, calm, free, and one of a
The importance of becoming aware of your own biases and stereotypes as prepare for a career in the health care field is that as an individual you become more understanding and open minded towards the general need of a population and the need of others that might have grew up differently. This understanding of the differences and the ability of asking the right questions depending on the interaction will result a better observation when it comes to health care field, especially when it comes to determining a condition or finding a treatment for a patient. For example, as was told on the YouTube video “Overcoming Cultural Stereotypes” that African American men have a dangerous reaction that is similar to a stroke if they take Beta Blockers,
Stereotyping, prejudice, conformity, and discrimination are well portrayed in the movie American History X. The negative attitude held by Derek towards to black people is greatly influenced and learned from his father who was a racist. Derek also transfers these prejudice attitudes towards his younger brother Danny as he grows up seeing the racism practiced in his family and his brother. Although these attitudes are based on propaganda, the two brothers conform to them and even join the Nazi group that holds similar ethnocentrism beliefs. This affirms and fuels the supremacist attitude, but unfortunately, it also leads to negative consequences in their lives. Derek murders an
Stereotypes. That is what most people would say of gender representation in popular culture. It is in the same jumbled up mess with sexism. Gender representation are deeply rooted in our community that most of the times, we are not even aware when stereotyping happens. It is rooted in us most probably because of the social status that we get far back when we were in our mother’s womb. Speaking of womb, physical aspects also make stereotyping a lot more unavoidable. On top of all of that comes culture that we were exposed to when growing up and exposed on a daily basis. From comic books, cartoons to blockbuster movies, men and women are constantly given an image that causes us to be indoctrinated to view certain aspects as the normal characteristics,
Had you ever be stereotyped by people and it had affected you in some way? Had you ever be called a stereotype, but just ignored it or sometimes play the part? There is the stereotype that exists around the world and we don’t even pay attention to it at all. We just ignore it as if it is going to go away soon or later, but it isn’t going away that easily. Stereotypes exist even on our campuses and we just don't even notices it, like we are dogs wondering what it is and we just walk away even does we see it every time. And we just think it magically went away, but I talk you what, it isn’t a fantasy at all, it is the real world and it isn’t going away if we do something about it. And sometimes you may think that it don’t affect anyone, but it does affect people that are being stereotyped in many ways that you don’t even know. In addition, you may don’t actually know because you had never been stereotyped and you don’t know what is going on, but on the other hand, you may be the person that stereotyped others for joy or maybe because you had been through it already.
Perception is a key component of human interaction. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of perception is “an immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities of others.” In the business world, my co-workers would have perceptions about myself. These perceptions; however, could be impacted by stereotypes. Collins Dictionary defines stereotype as “a fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing.” Perceptions and stereotypes may blend together. Whatever the case, either one effect one’s reputation. In the business world, one’s reputation can create or destroy one’s image, therefore affecting how that person
People in the advertising business want individuals to understand what the message is from the advertisement. In order to attract other individuals’ attention, the advertiser will use cultural myths. The real issue is that these cultural myths are not always a good thing. In Robert Scholes essay “On Reading a Video Text”, he argues how “Video texts, like all except the most utilitarian forms of textuality, are constructed upon a base of boredom, from which they promise us relief” (Scholes 619). By watching these commercials, they promise a sense of comical relief. Scholes explains how we form ideologies from commercials and advertisements of how or what a certain object means to an individual. Because individuals watch advertisements and commercials,
After reading the text, viewing the different cultural videos, and the culture of emotions video I started to realize many common themes and connections to build my knowledge base. One very important difference across all materials for this course was the difference between western and eastern/non-western cultural beliefs, specifically when looking at indigenous healing practices. It is clearly essential for the helping professional to be knowledgeable about cultural backgrounds and culture-bound syndromes that may occur for each cultural population. As the text stated, culture-bound syndromes are disorders specific to a cultural group or society but not easily given a diagnosis (Sue & Sue, 2013). There is a chart in the text that describes
There is a misconception that your neighborhood shapes who you are as a person. However, that cannot be proven because there are exceptions to both sides. There have been cases where people who come from wealthy neighborhoods commit horrible crimes, and there are also cases where people from “bad” neighborhoods who have made a powerful and positive impact in society. I believe that your neighborhood does not define who you are as a person; it’s purely subjective.
People being indiscriminate based on partial and inexact information by sources as television, cartoons or even comic books This is a description that seems to go against many public standards. The above words are the exact description of stereotypes. Stereotypes as implicit from the description, goes mostly hand in hand with media -- only not the standard meaning of the blameless media we know. Media propaganda is the other form of media that is somewhat described as media treatment. In this paper, the subsequent will be discussed: first, how stereotypes of ethnic groups operate in propaganda, why does it function so satisfactorily, and finally, the consequences of these stereotypes on the life of Egyptians in particular in society. A
Stereotypes in short, are often about seeking patterns. It cannot be helped but to use them as not only a function in society, but also as a way to understand it as humans today are known to identify well with patterns. This question will be explored using the following areas of knowledge; human sciences and history. As well as using the above areas of knowledge to explore this question, ways of knowing, in particular, emotion, perception, language and reason, will be used in conjunction. Taking the story of Gandhi as a prime example, it is important on two levels; most importantly however, the way in which it exposes not only the negative cultural stereotype of the “stupid foreigner”, but how at the same time it undermines and
