China has a long and mysterious history of almost five thousand years. There are about 195 countries worldwide, yet if one were to be questioned about any one specific culture, they would not be able to answer. As already known, the United States is a country of immigrants. It could be described as “a ‘melting pot’ in which different cultures have contributed their own distinct ‘flavors’ to American culture” (Zimmermann, 2017). One of the most distinct cultures that have entered America would have to be the Chinese culture. China is a unique country in itself yet with so much to learn, it is safe to say that the average person would not know a small fraction of what makes up the Chinese culture. China, as every other country, is unique due to its tourism, customs, family life, and its government.
China has become a rather multinational country within itself and former separated regions due to the Qing Dynasty taking over and having a rather successful reign from 1644 to 1911. The Qing Dynasty were the ones to add several regions to China including Taiwan, Mongolia, Tibet, and Xinjiang. This was a huge step, even though there was trouble with the merger of these realms it turned out to be a good thing for many of these regions and China as well after all the dust settled. One of the biggest difficulties was the language barrier between these regions, the inability to understand one another always creates hardships. The Qing allowed the people of the regions they ended up taking over to keep many of their cultures to try to make it easier for the new realms to accept the Qing. There was of course many people that didn’t accept the Qing’s rule and they created groups and brotherhoods against the Qing including the well-known at the time Heaven and Earth Society. The effects of what the Qing Dynasty had done by combining many of the realms in the area and bringing its people together, even though many fought the merger have made China the large and diverse Asian country it has become today.

At the core of any nation’s culture are its religious beliefs. In China there are the “Three Jewels” Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, as described in Lopez (1996). There are small numbers of people practicing other religions such as Christianity and Islam, but these are the three dominant beliefs of the region. While they are separate in content, they have coexisted for several thousand years. Lopez (1996) goes on to say, “Historical precedent and popular parlance attest to the importance of this threefold division for understanding Chinese culture…Buddhism is the sun, Daoism the moon, and Confucianism the five planets…suggesting that although they remain separate, they also coexist as equally indispensable phenomena of the natural world.” Each belief system stands alone, and at the same time needs the other(s).
Now I’ll tell you about the geography of China. On the east of China there are two bodies of water, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. Then in the Southeast corner of China there is the South China Sea. In the Southwest corner is India. Sharing with India on its borders there is the Himalaya Mt. and within them is Mt. Everest which is one of the biggest mountains in the world. Coming from the east, the Yangzi River flows in and stops right around the center of China. Above it is the Huang He River that flows on the same direction the Yangzi River does. The top center of China is the Gobi Desert. There are many more geography than this but here are just some that I chose to talk about.
