In order to be a culturally competent practitioner, educators and families could start with critical reflection on attitudes and values and or the ways in which children respond to diversity within their community. An educator could find out about family practices and cultures, and include resources, experiences and strategies that reflect the diversity of children, families and the broader community. Having continual assessment of our own and the settings attitudes and values towards difference, could be a strategy to become more culturally competent, as well as the ability to adapt interactions and services to meet the needs of families and communities. I have learned that it is important that educators and health providers be trained on cultural competency to understand the population they are serving. Marks, Sims, and Osher (King, Sims, & Osher, n.d.) define cultural competency as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enables that system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross–cultural situations" ( as cited in Cross et al., 1989; Isaacs & Benjamin, 1991). Health providers and educators should investigate demographic patterns or trends in the place where they live and work. This brings awareness of the types of cultures that they might come across when they are working with people. Organizations should integrate and implement policies that promote the value of diversity, self-assessment, manage the dynamics of difference, acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge, and adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of communities they serve (Georgetown University, 2004). Georgetown University (2004) also stresses that culture competency grows gradually and is always open for improvement.
For us to develop cultural competence we need to have a level expertise, knowledge and attributes. When I mention Expertise I am referring to professional skills such as, being able to communicate correct information for culturally different people and their communities, the skill to candidly discuss racial and ethnic issues and to react to culturally based signs, the skill to understand the meaning that traditions/culture has for each person, Interviewing skills that help to understand and accommodate the role of language in a person’s culture and the skill to use the idea of empowerment on behalf of culturally different people and communities.

Cultural diversity is an important phenomenal for teachers in training to become familiar with and I believe it is for this reason that the Education Department at Medgar Evers College has as one of its eight-unit standard Personal and Global Consciousness. There are three core goals leading a counselor to become culturally competent, which include awareness of personal biases, understanding and acknowledging the worldviews of individuals from all cultures, and developing appropriate techniques and interventions by using specific skills and strategies. Becoming aware of ones own biases is essential for changing ones perspective. For my cultural competence paper, I attended a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. The meeting was held at the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg on Wednesday, February 15th at 7:30 p.m. and lasted about one hour. Prior to attending the meeting, I was incredibly nervous and I did not know what to expect. The purpose of the assignment was meant for us to step out of our comfort zone and explore something that we have never done before and I thought that attending the meeting would be a perfect fit. I have never attended a NA meeting prior to this assignment nor did I have a specific reason to.

Culturally competent practitioner is regardless of the diversity within the setting, it is essential that children are exposed to different diverse languages, beliefs, practices, family structures and interaction styles that are encouraged to develop positive attitudes and differences. As well as striving to provide a consistent service who are open to difference and change. Culturally competent practitioner needs to explore ways, show different skills, show a wide range of knowledge and attitudes to make the world a peaceful place, who will make people grow and shine.

First and foremost, I would like to point out that I underestimated this course prior to its launch. It has surely challenged and steered many of my views and beliefs in such a short period of time. This course, overall, has truly been the most challenging, but I have taken plenty of knowledge and insight from it. There is so much that an individual can do in order to improve cultural competence within families as well as what a professional can do in order to encourage cultural competence within themselves. Ultimately, I now believe that it is absolutely fair to say that both professionals and society in general have a considerable amount of information to learn before gaining cultural competence;knowledge may be gained through personal experiences
Defined as the ability of providers and organizations to effectively deliver health care services that meet the social, cultural and linguistic needs (Georgetown University, 2004) Cultural competence is an ideal that spans across not only healthcare, but also law enforcement. Utilizing the same mindset as the healthcare industry, law enforcement has the dubious task of deciphering how to provide a service meant for all and ensure that the needs of all citizens and businesses are met. According to Terry Cross (1988), culturally competent agencies are characterized by acceptance and respect for difference, continuing self-assessment regarding culture, careful attention to the dynamics of difference, continuous expansion of cultural knowledge and resources, and a variety of adaptations to service models in order to better meet the needs of minority populations.
