Over the years the concept of culture has shaped people and what they believe in. According to the textbook culture is defined as a set of beliefs, traditions, and practices. The conception of culture can be described as material or nonmaterial. Material culture is described as everything that is a part of our constructed, physical environment. On the other hand, nonmaterial culture refers to values, beliefs, behaviors, and social normal. I believe culture can be defined and shaped in many ways. I feel that culture differs from one location to another because the natural environment has an impact on the culture. Also, some people come up with their own ideas and values. The culture of Haiti is a various mix of African and European elements due to the French colonization of Saint Dominguez. I chose to research this culture for two reason one reason being that I have a friend who is Haitian and I never understood why she did what she did, or even her mother. The second reason is because many people in Haiti is associated with voodoo, and that’s something I personally wouldn’t get to involved with due to my religious views. The Haitian culture it is somewhat like being Hispanic. Being eighteen doesn't mean a thing as long as you are living under your parents home you are expected to obey their rules. For example, my best friend received a full scholarship to an out of state college in North Dakota. Every semester break he has for school he always comes back to home to his parents house. Since he is back home his parent rules go back in action because he is technically back under their roof. I personally thought it was strange because normally when it come down to being Haitian. I am so excited about taking this course not just because I want to enhance my writing skills but also because I want to know about the Haitian literature in general. This includes, cultural and historical events, writing masters and everything else that takes part of the Haitian literature that complement the essence of Haitians culture. For example, the 2010 Haiti earthquake shook the culture from its foundation. The capital itself is still in ruins and the social and economic situation is as worse as it has ever been. Yet because of this Haitians have been forced to being cleaning up their own neighborhoods and open up their own schools. This has bonded together those who once would have never known each other.

As I read and did research on Haitian's culture I noticed that they are into a lot of music and celebrations a long with a lot of art. Kids in Haiti do a lot of painting and enjoy a lot of music but what do they make art with? What do they make music with? What makes these celebrations so big? Donations from all over the world have made these kids have so much more art work and music compared to what they have had before, they would use they fingers or stick to make their paint brushes, they would use bowls, pots, and pans to make music or anything that made a beat.
