Media shapes the society we live in today and has grown and evolved to become a way of controlling culture and people. Media has a variety of meanings, the most common being; channels of communication which can range from interpersonal media such as letters, texting, telephone and skype to mass media which uses TV, radio, newspapers and the internet to convey information.

The vessel in which information is being communicated is very important, as it has a heavy influence on the way a society and its culture is formed. Harold Innis, a political economist, wrote about the bias of communication and monopolies of power and divided media bias into 2 categories; time biased media and space biased media. He compares time biased media to the Egyptian rule and space bias to the Roman Empire. The idea being that, changes in communication rapidly advance society, and you must find the correct balance between time and space biased communication to achieve a stable society.

The priority of news outlets is to keep an audience which is its most vital commodity. This involves making the news appealing and entertaining which should cater to the guilty pleasures and prejudices of the audience, such as: fear, moral self-satisfaction and feel good stories. Furthermore, news channels need to sensor themselves to avoid legal action being taken against them, so tread softly when it comes to sensitive matters and embellish stories.
